The Team

Every engineer at Aflac builds on what we ship. The Developer Experience (DevX) team in Aflac Northern Ireland exists to make software delivery faster, safer and simpler, so product teams can focus on solving problems for customers, employees and the sales organisation rather than working through delivery complexity. We're building a simpler, standard and measurable software delivery system, powered by AI and designed to help Aflac deliver more business value, more quickly.

Our job is to provide the shared capabilities that make good delivery repeatable: platforms, tooling, golden paths, automated controls, engineering standards and AI-aware knowledge, integrated at enterprise scale. In practice, that means a self-service portal for onboarding applications and components, secure-by-default pipelines, automated change-management checks, and integrates our entire DevOps tooling estate. We treat it all as a product, with Aflac's engineers as our customers, and we build it in an AI-native way, with AI agents working alongside us from research and planning through to code, review and production support.

The Role

This role works across our whole technology stack, from the user interface to the infrastructure underneath it. You'll build features in the DevX portal, develop the services and integrations behind it, create golden path pipelines and automated controls, and run the cloud infrastructure the platform depends on. You'll also help manage the DevOps tools that Aflac engineering relies on every day, including GitHub, Azure DevOps and its build agents, SonarQube, Snyk and Cloudsmith, keeping them secure, reliable and well integrated.

You'll work in an AI-native way, using AI agents throughout your delivery and helping refine the workflows, skills and knowledge that make the team more effective. You don't need to be an expert in every area on day one. We're looking for strong engineering fundamentals, good judgement and the curiosity to grow across the platform.

What Makes This Role Exciting

Few roles cover this much of the stack or reach this many engineers. Your code will run in every pipeline across Aflac, so one new template, brick or integration can save hundreds of engineers time and make every release more secure. You'll also be at the front of AI-native engineering, helping define practices that the rest of the organisation adopts.

Key Responsibilities

Delivering self-service platform features end to end, from spec to production, working with AI agents at each step and working across every layer of the platform:

  • Backend: Java 21 / Spring Boot services integrating with GitHub, Azure DevOps, Active Directory, ServiceNow, CyberArk, Cloudsmith, Snyk and SonarQube
  • Frontend:the DevX portal (Angular) and documentation site (MkDocs)
  • Golden paths:Azure DevOps pipeline templates, component templates and TypeScript pipeline extensions
  • Compliance:policy-as-code (OPA / Rego) for automated change-management checks
  • Infrastructure:IaC, Kubernetes on Amazon EKS, RDS PostgreSQL and the platform's own CI/CD
  • Writing unit tests, automated functional tests and post-deployment checks as part of every change
  • Building and improving the agent skills, steering and knowledge bases that our AI-native delivery depends on
  • Solving integration and reliability problems with a focus on blast radius, observability and safe rollout
  • Supporting the capabilities we build

Skills and Experience

We value breadth over depth. If you don't have everything listed, don't rule yourself out. Your intellect, attitude and passion for improving how engineers work matter most.

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial software engineering, delivering features end to end
  • Strong skills in Java (Spring Boot) or TypeScript, and confidence working in other languages
  • Experience with REST APIs, microservices and cloud-native design patterns
  • Hands-on CI/CD pipeline experience (Azure DevOps preferred)
  • Working knowledge of Docker and at least one cloud platform (AWS preferred)
  • Understanding of DevSecOps and building security into delivery pipelines
  • Daily use of AI coding assistants or agents, or a strong drive to work that way, with the judgement to review and own what they produce
  • High agency: you act like an owner, work self-sufficiently when needed and see problems through to resolution
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and a collaborative, customer-focused mindset
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a STEM subject (or comparable experience)

Highly Desirable

  • Experience in several of these areas is enough:
  • Azure DevOps YAML templates, extensions and decorators
  • Kubernetes / Amazon EKS, AWS IAM and RDS, and IaC (CloudFormation, CDK or Terraform)
  • Angular or React, Node.js, and Python or Bash scripting
  • Security and identity: Snyk, SonarQube, OIDC/OAuth 2.0, Active Directory, CyberArk
  • Test automation frameworks, Dynatrace and PostgreSQL
  • Agentic development tools such as Kiro or GitHub Copilot, and prompt and context engineering
  • Experience mentoring and upskilling junior engineers

Emerging Technology Bonus Points

  • Agentic AI: Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, MCP servers and agent skills
  • Policy-as-code with Open Policy Agent (Rego)
  • Developer experience metrics and platform adoption measurement

Thanks for reading this far. We'd love to hear from you if you want to join a technology innovation company with start-up agility and Fortune 500 stability, where AI-native engineering is already how we deliver.
