Software Engineer (Mid-Level/Senior) – React & Content Platform

Build the content platform behind the educational resources used in Australian and International classrooms.

Hotmaths develops a web-based learning platform for schools and universities, built around content from Cambridge University Press & Assessment and brought to life with video, quizzes and interactive material.

We're looking for a Software Engineer to build the content management systems that get that material onto the platform — accurately and at scale.

This is a primarily front-end role using TypeScript and React, with some backend work alongside it. You'll start on foundational development in our Payload CMS, then move into maintaining and extending it while building support for entirely new types of educational resources over the coming years.

What you'll do

• Build and refine the front-end of our Payload CMS in TypeScript and React — the interfaces our content team works in every day
• Design and build support for new educational resource types as the platform grows
• Take on backend work where needed, including parsing, processing and converting supplied and generated content into the structured JSON consumed by the CMS
• Work with complex educational content and formats such as HTML, XML and LaTeX
• Work directly with content providers, including Cambridge University Press, alongside our developers and QA team
• Work in an agile development environment with iterative releases and continuous improvement

What you'll bring

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong professional experience with TypeScript and React — this is where most of the work sits
• Experience building and maintaining substantial web applications, not just individual UI components
• Enough backend confidence to transform complex data into structured JSON when the job calls for it
• The ability to understand detailed requirements and turn them into practical, maintainable software
• Clear communication skills — you'll be working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• A degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent industry experience
• You must be able to work from our Port Melbourne office two days per week

Nice to have

• Experience in online publishing or educational technology
• Experience with XML, HTML, LaTeX, JavaScript or Python
• Broad full-stack web development experience
• Experience working with content management systems

How we work

This is a permanent, full-time hybrid role based in Port Melbourne, Melbourne.

Salary

Base salary from $105k to $135k, dependent on skills and experience, plus bonus and superannuation.

You'll work from our Port Melbourne office two days a week and remotely for the rest — enough time together for real collaboration and knowledge sharing while retaining flexibility for focused remote work.
