The Role and Team

This entry-level position for a Front-End Software Engineer I on the Alchemy team will play a key role in building the foundation of Medallia’s user interfaces. Alchemy is responsible for maintaining our core component library as well as designing, creating, and delivering our next-generation design system.

In this role, you will help build new components from the ground up, utilizing modern AI tools to streamline workflows and drive innovation while also maintaining and supporting the current Alchemy component library and design system. This role requires a hands-on, collaborative engineer who is passionate about scalable UI architecture and eager to grow within a dynamic engineering culture.

Responsibilities

• Component Development: Build, maintain, and refine scalable, high-performance UI components using TypeScript, modern JavaScript frameworks (React, SolidJS), and design tokens across Medallia’s front-end applications.
• AI-Assisted Workflow: Leverage AI coding assistants (such as Claude and Cursor) to accelerate component scaffolding, refactoring, and test generation—taking full human-in-the-loop ownership and accountability for code quality, security, and performance.
• Accessibility & Standards: Implement fully accessible (WCAG compliant) and responsive components, adhering to strict design system standards and cross-browser compatibility.
• Testing & Quality Assurance: Develop comprehensive unit and end-to-end test suites using Jest, Playwright, and modern testing utilities to ensure system reliability and minimize technical debt.
• Design & UX Collaboration: Partner closely with Design and UX teams to translate Figma designs into robust code, ensuring visual fidelity and seamless component behavior.
• Cross-Functional Engagement: Work directly with Product Managers, technical leaders, and consuming product engineering teams to gather feedback, support component integration, and align on design system roadmaps.
• Package Management & Governance: Assist with design system versioning, component documentation, and npm package updates to ensure smooth deployments and long-term library maintainability.
• Agile & Operational Excellence: Actively contribute to Agile lifecycle practices (stand-ups, retrospectives, code reviews) and manage issues and documentation transparently in Jira and Confluence.

Candidates based in the Tysons vicinity will be prioritized as this role is Hybrid, 3 days per week onsite.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or commensurate experience in a closely related technical field.
• 1+ years of related experience. For recent graduates, this requirement is met through a combination of significant internships, complex academic projects, or a documented portfolio of personal technical work.
• Demonstrated understanding of core computer science principles, modern front-end web architecture, DOM structure, and systematic debugging techniques for web applications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Tooling Proficiency: Practical exposure to Git, CI/CD workflows, or build pipelines through previous coursework, internships, or open-source contributions. Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or Cursor.
• Front-end and Component Development: Experience building with JavaScript/TypeScript and familiarity with popular front-end frameworks (e.g., React, SolidJS).
• Design Systems: Experience with component-based architecture and an understanding of Design System principles, including the creation and documentation of component libraries.
• Behavioral Curiosity: A demonstrated drive to independently investigate technical solutions combined with the professional maturity to recognize when to seek senior guidance.
• Communication Appetite: Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to participating actively in collaborative technical reviews and team-wide architecture discussions.Medallia is committed to equal pay and transparency. The annual base salary range for this position is $95,000-105,000 USD.
