This position is a Software Engineering Internship for Summer 2027 opportunity located in Beavercreek/Dayton, OH. Application deadline: October 23 rd , 2026 "From Silicon to Systems" — Battelle is an elite, multi-disciplinary team bringing together the brightest minds from physics, computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics to develop unique embedded security solutions for government and industrial customers. We work in small, agile teams to push the bounds of computing technology, supported by high-powered labs equipped with specialized software and hardware so our engineers have everything they need to invent new cyber solutions. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will spend your days designing, coding, and testing software on non-standard, highly customized projects that will push you to new levels as a software developer. You will contribute to a Python and PyQt framework for the analysis of integrated circuits, develop code to interface with hardware systems, and leverage AI models and version control to produce robust, well-documented solutions. Responsibilities As a Software Engineer Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop and maintain cutting-edge embedded software solutions. Responsibilities may include: Research and analyze new libraries, technologies, and tools; perform full software life cycle functions including requirements definition, architecture, design, coding, testing, integration, and documentation Develop code to interface with hardware systems such as FPGAs, microcontrollers (MCUs), and common lab equipment including lock-in amplifiers, oscilloscopes, DAQ hardware, power supplies, source measure units, and function generators Contribute to a Python and PyQt framework for the analysis of integrated circuits, built around open-source libraries, leveraging AI models and version control to produce robust and well-integrated code Work with a senior software engineer and additional team members to understand project requirements and scope, and design, develop, or modify software and firmware for custom, memory-constrained hardware and related systems Key Qualifications Currently pursuing a bachelor degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study Junior standing or higher Proficiency in Python Experience with Git Experience interfacing with APIs Local travel expected Must be a sole U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a security clearance Preferred Qualifications Ability to instantiate virtual machines and development environments for active development Strong understanding of common data structures, algorithms, and their applications Experience automating tasks using Python or Bash scripts Experience adding functionality and resolving issues within existing codebases Experience with lab automation Experience with Qt/PyQt Experience with AI-assisted code development Experience with programmable embedded systems, including FPGAs and MCUs Passion and drive to continuously improve your skill set Compensation Data Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $20.00–$40.00 per hour, in addition to a $2,000 housing stipend for students relocating more than 50 miles from home and university. Internship pay is benchmarked against national averages taking into consideration a student's major and year in school.
