Software Test Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a Front-End Test Engineer to own quality across our web and mobile front-ends. The role is a mix of automated and manual testing: extending and maintaining our existing automated suites, and doing the hands-on exploratory testing that automation will never cover.

The systems you will test are used by one of the largest stock brokers in the United States, so an understanding of stock trading and how brokerage platforms work is a real advantage — it is the difference between confirming a screen renders and knowing whether the number on it is right.

This is a fully remote role, but candidates must reside in the greater Cape Town area for team lunches and get togethers. Candidates must also be able to work US Eastern Time hours (14:00 - 00:00 SAST) when required, for release testing and collaboration with the engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Exploratory, functional, and regression testing across web and mobile front-ends
• Test new features against acceptance criteria; verify releases post-deployment
• Extend and maintain existing automated suites (E2E, integration, regression) and keep them stable and free of flaky tests
• Identify coverage gaps, decide what is worth automating, and convert repetitive manual regression into automated coverage
• Maintain test execution and reporting in CI/CD pipeline
• Report and track defects clearly enough that engineers can act on them immediately
• Work with engineering throughout the cycle and raise ambiguity in requirements before development starts

Required Experience

• Solid commercial testing experience covering both manual and automated work
• Strong hands-on experience with Playwright
• Strong JavaScript or TypeScript experience
• Proven ability to maintain and extend an established suite, including diagnosing flaky tests
• Rigorous exploratory testing, test case design, and defect reporting
• Good grasp of web fundamentals: DOM, selectors, async behaviour, network requests
• API testing to support front-end scenarios (REST, Postman, or similar)
• Experience with tests running in CI/CD pipelines
• Have a good understanding of how software systems interact with each other

Nice to Have

• Understanding of stock trading, brokerage platforms, or financial markets
• Experience in financial or regulated environments
• Visual regression testing (Playwright snapshots, Applitools, Percy)
• Accessibility (axe, WCAG) and performance testing (Lighthouse, k6)
• Mobile app testing (Appium or similar)
• AI-assisted test generation or self-healing test tooling
• Docker and containerised test environments
