Job Summary
The Solution Architect, Clinical Technologies is the primary solution architecture and design authority for technology solutions supporting the Medavie Clinic Division.
The role translates clinical, business, operational, security, privacy, and regulatory requirements into secure, reliable, scalable, and supportable technology solutions that align with enterprise standards and strategic objectives. The Solution Architect leads requirements analysis, solution evaluation, architecture development, technical design, implementation planning, and operational readiness activities across clinic technologies.
Working within a federated delivery model, the position is accountable for the overall solution design and integration of technologies supporting clinic operations, while partnering with Enterprise Architecture, Cyber Security, Privacy, Infrastructure, Identity, Networking, Service Delivery, and other specialist teams who retain ownership of their respective standards, governance processes, and operational services.
The Solution Architect develops and maintains architecture deliverables including current-state and target-state architectures, transition roadmaps, architecture decision records, solution designs, implementation standards, and supporting documentation. The role ensures traceability from business and clinical requirements through design, testing, governance review, implementation, operational acceptance, and lifecycle management.
Architecturally significant solutions are coordinated through appropriate enterprise governance processes including Enterprise Architecture, Technology Review Board (TRB), Cyber Security, Privacy, and operational review forums. The Solution Architect is responsible for incorporating approved recommendations, standards, controls, and required exceptions into solution designs.
This is a highly hands-on architecture role that combines broad technical knowledge with practical implementation experience. While not expected to be the deepest technical specialist in every domain, the architect must possess sufficient breadth, judgment, and leadership to design integrated solutions, coordinate specialist resources, and ensure solutions are secure, supportable, and operationally ready.
Key Responsibilities
Solution Architecture and Technical Design
- Lead requirements clarification, options analysis, and the development of current-state, target-state, and transition architectures for clinic technology solutions.
- Engage clinicians, clinic operators, business leaders, IT teams, and vendors to define functional requirements, non-functional requirements, integration requirements, dependencies, operational constraints, and support expectations.
- Produce architecture views, technical designs, architecture decision records, implementation diagrams, and supporting documentation that clearly document options, trade-offs, assumptions, risks, costs, and recommendations.
- Design integrated solutions spanning cloud services, infrastructure, networks, security, identity, endpoint management, business applications, clinical applications, databases, websites, and vendor-hosted platforms in alignment with clinic objectives and enterprise standards.
- Apply approved enterprise architecture principles, security controls, privacy requirements, and reusable technology patterns while identifying and documenting required exceptions.
- Coordinate solution reviews with Enterprise Architecture, Cyber Security, Privacy, Infrastructure, and other governance bodies, incorporating required controls and recommendations into the final design.
- Maintain traceability from business and clinical requirements through design, testing, operational readiness, implementation, and support transition activities.
Technical Implementation, Testing and Troubleshooting
- Perform hands-on configuration, deployment, integration, testing, validation, cutover, stabilization, and troubleshooting for clinic technology solutions.
- Lead or support implementations for new clinics, acquisitions, migrations, upgrades, technology replacements, and patient-facing services.
- Validate performance, availability, resiliency, backup, recovery, monitoring, security, privacy, remote access, and operational support requirements.
- Coordinate vendors and internal teams during implementation while resolving technical dependencies and escalations.
- Participate in major incident response, problem management, root-cause analysis, and complex troubleshooting when architecture or specialized solution knowledge is required.
Technical Standards, Documentation and Operational Transition
- Develop and maintain reusable clinic technology standards and patterns, including standard clinic network designs, new-clinic blueprints, acquisition integration patterns, remote-access architecture, endpoint standards, and EMR or patient-application integration patterns.
- Produce complete and current architecture records, configuration documentation, inventories, support procedures, runbooks, recovery procedures, and knowledge articles.
- Define operational readiness and support acceptance criteria before production transition.
- Provide knowledge transfer and practical training to downstream service desk, infrastructure, network, endpoint, application, and clinic support teams.
- Transition stabilized solutions to the appropriate operational owner with documented responsibilities, escalation paths, and support dependencies.
Business, Clinical and Enterprise Collaboration
- Act as the primary solution architecture resource for Clinical Technologies while working within enterprise technology, security, privacy, and service-management governance.
- Translate clinic workflows and business objectives into practical technology design without losing operational or clinical context.
- Understand how clinic solutions integrate with ERP, HRMS, finance, identity, data, ITSM, and other enterprise platforms.
- Participate in technology and vendor selection and, where appropriate, lead implementation within the clinic division.
- Communicate recommendations, risks, decisions, status, and technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Lifecycle Management, Governance and Continuous Improvement
- Maintain solution roadmaps and lifecycle plans covering capacity, currency, support status, technical debt, security, availability, continuity, and eventual replacement.
- Ensure implementations follow ITSM practices, ITIL change control, configuration management, release planning, and formal production change processes.
- Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, automate, consolidate, and improve the reliability and supportability of clinic technologies.
- Support acquisition due diligence, integration planning, clinic onboarding, business continuity planning, and technology risk assessment.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and proof-of-concept opportunities where they address a defined clinic or business need.
Innovation
- Identify opportunities to standardize clinic technology and create repeatable designs for new clinics, acquisitions, integrations, and remote access.
- Evaluate cloud, automation, security, patient-facing, clinical, and infrastructure technologies against defined business and clinical needs.
- Develop proofs of concept where required to validate feasibility, usability, integration, supportability, security, and cost.
- Recommend modernization opportunities that reduce technical debt, improve resiliency, strengthen security and privacy, simplify support, or improve clinical operations.
- Improve documentation, implementation, transition, and training practices based on lessons learned and operational feedback.
Working Conditions
- Primarily remote or office-based work with extensive computer and collaboration requirements.
- Requires sustained concentration, independent judgment, and coordination across concurrent operational and project priorities.
- Occasional after-hours work may be required for implementations, maintenance, clinic cutovers, major incidents, or recovery activities.
- Minor national travel to clinic locations, corporate offices, data centres, or vendor sites may be required.
- Occasional physical activity may be required to inspect, install, connect, or troubleshoot technology and network equipment.
Required Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant IT experience, including experience designing and implementing integrated technology solutions. Demonstrated hands-on experience with configuration, deployment, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and transition to support.

Other Qualifications:

- Strong understanding of architecture principles, solution design methodologies, systems integration, technology lifecycle management, operational readiness, and service transition.
- Ability to evaluate business, clinical, operational, security, privacy, supportability, and cost considerations when developing solution recommendations.
- Experience producing architecture documentation, technical standards, implementation plans, diagrams, decision records, operational procedures, and support documentation.
- Working knowledge of cloud and on-premises environments, network architecture, server infrastructure, endpoint management, application integrations, databases, websites, and IT service management practices.
- Understanding of security-by-design principles, privacy requirements, business continuity, disaster recovery, data residency considerations, and vendor risk management.
- Strong analytical, communication, facilitation, documentation, stakeholder engagement, and training skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Enterprise Architecture, Cyber Security, Infrastructure, Privacy, Service Delivery, vendors, and business stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex technology initiatives from requirements gathering through implementation, operational transition, and lifecycle management.
- Experience with clinical technologies, EMRs, patient-facing applications, healthcare integrations, clinic websites, or multi-site healthcare environments is an asset.
- Lead, mentor, and guide less experienced team member in best practices
