Role Overview
As a Senior Application Platform Engineer, you'll be an embedded member of product engineering groups, enabling self-service deployments, maintaining operational excellence, and driving platform evolution. You'll create solutions in a dynamic environment where innovation is encouraged and excellence is recognized. You'll use your technical expertise to help engineering teams build secure, reliable, and scalable applications.
This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable application platforms that enable product engineering teams to move safely to production. The focus is on enabling secure, reliable, and operationally mature services through embedded platform engineering. As the Application Platform Engineer, you will work directly inside product engineering groups as a functional team member, participating in design reviews, architecture decisions, and operational readiness assessments.
The role combines deep expertise in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, and application architecture. It operates with a platform-as-a-product mindset, enabling self-service capabilities through developer platforms (e.g., Backstage) and internal developer tools to accelerate delivery and standardization.
This is a Hybrid position located in Frisco, TX. You will be required to be on-site on an as-needed basis; when you are not working on-site, you will work from your home office. You must be within commutable distance of Frisco, TX. We are not offering relocation assistance at this time.
Position Details
About The Role
- Embed with assigned product engineering groups, participating in standups, design reviews, sprint planning, and release readiness calls as a standing team member.
- Build and maintain functional knowledge of products and services the assigned groups own, ensuring platform guidance is grounded in product context.
- Migrate services onto golden paths and the internal developer platform; identify and remove friction points that prevent teams from self-serving.
- Review pull requests and architecture proposals through a production-readiness lens: 'Will this run reliably under 24/7 SRE operations?'.
- Bring services to operational maturity before handoff—establish monitoring, alerting, runbooks, failover strategies, and support SRE validation.
- Own the monthly patching cycle for assigned groups: OS, runtime, container base image and dependency patches applied, tested, and regression-verified.
- Run scheduled performance, load, and soak testing against reference workloads; triage findings and implement remediation, escalating only where product code changes are required.
- Join major incidents alongside SRE and feed platform and architecture gaps back into the roadmap.
- Design and implement CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Harness with automated quality gates, security scanning, and artifact management.
- Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and Terragrunt for reproducible, auditable deployments across environments.
- Establish observability standards: distributed tracing, metrics, logs, and alerting using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, Datadog, or Instana.
About You
- 5-8 years of hands-on experience in software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, or SRE with meaningful time writing production code.
- Demonstrated experience working directly inside product engineering teams (not solely through ticket queues).
- Track record of diagnosing and fixing production issues end-to-end across application and infrastructure boundaries.
- Build-capable in Go (Golang) and Python; able to read and troubleshoot Node.js/TypeScript, Dart/Flutter, Java, .NET, C++, and C.
- SQL proficiency (TSQL, PLpgSQL) for query performance tuning and migration pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with AWS (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, IAM, VPC) and production-grade Kubernetes.
- Working knowledge of GCP/GKE and Docker.
- Expertise in Terraform, Terragrunt, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
- Proficiency with GitHub Actions (build) and Harness (deploy); understanding of artifact and image caching, automated quality gates.
- Experience with integration and end-to-end testing frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, PyTest, Testcontainers).
- Performance testing expertise (K6, Locust, JMeter) for stress and scalability analysis.
- Strong knowledge of databases (DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, MongoDB, Cassandra, SQL Server).
- Experience with message queuing (Confluent Kafka, Redis) and distributed systems concepts.
- Security and supply chain knowledge: SonarQube, BlackDuck/Coverity, Dependabot, JFrog, or equivalent; experience with remediation workflows.
- Daily working use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, CodeRabbit) within security guardrails.
- Desired Skills include:
- Mobile DevOps exposure (Fastlane with Flutter/Dart, Swift, or Kotlin builds and automated UI testing).
- Experience with Kong API gateway and Okta.
- Familiarity with Backstage-based internal developer platforms.
- Experience with internal service frameworks (e.g., Gofr, NodeFr/Zode).
- LLM integration and prompt engineering skills.
- Cloud architecture certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, GCP Associate Cloud Engineer).
- Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD).
