Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled Mainframe Specialist with a minimum of 4 years of experience to join our technology team. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in the design, development, maintenance, and support of critical business applications running on our mainframe systems. This role requires deep expertise in COBOL programming and strong proficiency in DB2 database management, ensuring the stability, performance, and reliability of our core systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Application Development & Enhancement:Develop, code, test, debug, and implement complex COBOL programs for new functionalities and enhancements to existing mainframe applications.Utilize JCL (Job Control Language) for batch processing, job scheduling, and system utilities.Work with CICS (Customer Information Control System) for online transaction processing applications, if applicable.
• Database Management & Optimization:Design, develop, and maintain DB2 database structures, including tables, indexes, views, and stored procedures.Write and optimize SQL queries for efficient data retrieval and manipulation within COBOL applications.Perform database performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal application performance.Assist with DB2 backup, recovery, and data integrity procedures.
• System Support & Maintenance:Provide technical support, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to mainframe applications and batch processes.Analyze and resolve production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.Conduct regular system health checks and preventative maintenance activities.
• Analysis & Design:Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications for mainframe solutions.Participate in system design, code reviews, and architectural discussions to ensure best practices are followed.
• Documentation & Collaboration:Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including program specifications, system flows, and operational procedures.Collaborate effectively with business analysts, project managers, other development teams, and operations staff.Mentor junior team members and share knowledge within the team.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience:Minimum of 4+ years of hands-on experience in mainframe application development and support.Proven experience with the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) in a mainframe environment.
• Technical Proficiency:COBOL: Expert-level proficiency in COBOL programming (preferably IBM Enterprise COBOL).DB2: Strong experience with DB2 for z/OS, including SQL, DDL, DML, performance tuning, and utilities.JCL: In-depth knowledge of JCL for batch job submission, job stream setup, and utility usage.TSO/ISPF: Proficient in using TSO/ISPF for development, debugging, and file management.Utilities: Familiarity with common mainframe utilities (e.g., IDCAMS, IEBGENER, SYNCSORT).Concepts: Solid understanding of mainframe architecture, data structures (VSAM, Sequential files), and batch processing.
• Core Competencies:Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues efficiently.Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with CICS (Customer Information Control System) for online transaction processing.
• Knowledge of other mainframe technologies such as VSAM, MQSeries, IMS, or Assembler.
• Familiarity with mainframe scheduling tools (e.g., CA-7, OPC/TWS).
• Experience with version control systems (e.g., Endevor, CA-Librarian, Panvalet).
• Understanding of ITIL principles and experience working in a structured production support environment.
• Exposure to Agile development methodologies.
