We have an opportunity for a Mining Engineer for employment in Mexico City, Mexico.
The ideal candidate will have a successful track record in delivering conceptual, preliminary and detailed design phases of mining engineering projects. They will work in a team environment with intermediate and senior engineers to deliver studies and detailed designs projects to our clients based in LATAM.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Technical Delivery
- Develop and review open pit and/or underground mine designs, layouts, and development plans across a range of project stages.
- Prepare life-of-mine plans, production schedules, and equipment selection analyses to support economic evaluations and operational decision-making.
- Optimize mine plans through trade-off studies, sensitivity analyses, and scenario evaluation to improve project value and reduce risk.
- Design haul roads, waste facilities, and stockpiles. This includes supporting other technical disciplines with mining inputs required for the design of mine infrastructure, process/ materials handling infrastructure and ancillary facilities.
- Ability to plan and produce procurement packages as it pertains to mining equipment to facilitate project tender process, including the production of relevant supporting engineering specifications and/ or design documentation.
- Support technical mentoring and development of junior and mid-level mining engineers within project teams.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ensure technical work is delivered in accordance with applicable standards, industry best practices, and AECOM quality requirements. This includes promoting accuracy and completeness in technical documentation.
- Demonstrate creativity, proactiveness, foresight and mature judgement in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges.
Client Management and Business Development
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities in the tailings management sector across Mexico and LATAM.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, acting as a trusted advisor for their mining engineering management needs.
- Lead proposal development, including scoping, budgeting, preparing technical content, and support of project management.
- Collaborate with the marketing and business development teams to grow AECOM’s market share in the tailings sector.
- Represent AECOM at industry conferences, professional associations, workshops, and client meetings to enhance visibility and thought leadership.
Project Leadership and Delivery
- Lead or support technical delivery for mining studies including Preliminary Economic Assessments (PEA), Prefeasibility Studies (PFS), and Feasibility Studies (FS).
- Perform the client-facing role of Project Manager or Deputy Project Manager on small to medium-sized projects. This role includes managing a multi-disciplinary team and project controls staff to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Act with intent to deliver the project in a timely manner to meet expected quality and allocated budget requirements.
- Support mining engineering workstreams, including scope development, scheduling, and coordination of deliverables.
- Identify and manage technical risks, assumptions, and opportunities throughout project execution.
- Support the team’s adherence to AECOM's project and quality standards, including capability of learning and adopting to clients' standards and requirements upon request.
Team Leadership
- Provide direct leadership, technical guidance, and mentorship to engineers across multiple projects.
- Review and approve technical work prepared by team members to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with AECOM standards and client objectives.
- Support performance management activities, including coaching, professional development, and input into performance reviews and career progression.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, innovation, and best practices within the mining engineering group.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment that promotes technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and alignment with AECOM’s safety, quality, and ethical values.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology from a recognized/accredited institution; or related discipline and 6+ years of mining engineering experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Preferred qualifications:
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficient with Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and specialized mining software (Mine Plan, Datamine, Vulcan, Deswik, Ventsim, CAD, or others)
- 10+ years of progressive experience in mine planning, mine design, and study delivery across open pit and/or underground operations.
- 6+ years mine engineering design experience in a multidisciplinary team environment, including field services during construction phase of projects.
- Experience in surface mining engineering design, planning and scheduling (in the short, medium and long-term context), project evaluation, pit optimization, equipment selection, reserves calculation, life-of-mine reserves analysis, cost estimation (Capex/ Opex), trade-off studies, and site plans (grading plans, drainage details, mine waste rock, topsoil, overburden, dry tailings, slurry tailings, material takeoffs).
- Experience in underground mining engineering design, planning and scheduling (in the short, medium and long-term context), project evaluation, excavation optimization, equipment selection, reserves calculation, life-of-mine reserves analysis, cost estimation (Capex/ Opex), trade-off studies, and infrastructure support (pertaining to mining).
- Experience in supporting procurement packages for mining equipment (scope of work, equipment datasheets / specifications),
- Ability to sign off on mining reserves as Qualified or Competent Person for NI-43101, S-K or JORC.
- Experience working in consulting or EPCM environments on multidisciplinary mining projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing technical workstreams and delivering client-focused solutions.
- Demonstrated experience with business development in the mining and industrial market and ability to win business.
- Possess current knowledge and ability to interpret and apply the relevant industry standards and their application for compliant designs.
