Role Overview

The NBC News Group Product Design team is a collaborative group of designers focused on creating useful, accessible, and engaging digital news experiences. We are looking for a strategic, customer-centered Senior Product Designer to join us for a short-term Q4 contract and help shape the future state of NBC News products across platforms.

In this role, you will translate product strategy and audience needs into future-state concepts, user journeys, prototypes, and storytelling patterns for NBC News digital experiences. You will partner closely with editorial, product, engineering, research, and leadership stakeholders to extend current concepts, explore new opportunities, present clear design rationale, incorporate feedback, and move quickly from ambiguity to tangible direction. The ideal candidate brings strong product design craft, systems thinking, news judgment, clear communication, and a high degree of ownership in a fast-moving environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

10+ years of product design experience, with proven success designing digital products that reach large audiences, preferably in a media or consumer-facing context.

3+ years of experience designing, maintaining, or scaling design systems.

Product Design Skills

Rapid concepting and prototyping, with the ability to explore multiple design directions, test assumptions, and refine ideas within a short-term timeline.

Cross-platform product design experience across web, mobile, app, video, alerts, live coverage, and other digital news surfaces.

Design research expertise, with a human-centered approach to identifying user needs and translating insights into product decisions.

Product discovery experience, including opportunity framing, journey mapping, concept development, and iterative validation.

Design systems fluency, including experience creating reusable storytelling components, editorial templates, product patterns, and system extensions.

Ability to frame design opportunities, articulate tradeoffs, and connect decisions to audience needs, product goals, and business value.

Strong UX, UI, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design craft, with a portfolio of polished consumer-facing digital work.

Clear communication and stakeholder alignment skills, including the ability to present concepts, explain rationale, incorporate feedback, and work across editorial, product, engineering, and leadership teams.

Comfort working through ambiguity, defining the right level of fidelity, asking sharp questions, and making progress with incomplete information.

Strong interest in news, journalism, audience behavior, and how digital products help people understand fast-moving stories.

Self-driven, collaborative, and comfortable taking initiative in a fast-moving product environment.

This is a Contract position based out of New York, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $80.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
