Our mission is to empower everyday heroes in the public, educational, and commercial sectors to make? safer ,? smarter , and? better ?decisions As a Senior Software Engineer on the Scheduling team, you will play a key role in designing, building, and evolving scalable software solutions that deliver meaningful customer value. Our Scheduling platform staffs emergency response personnel for fire and EMS agencies, with a hard thirty-second requirement for emergency callback delivery — correctness and latency are not negotiable. You'll partner closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to solve complex technical problems, improve platform reliability, and drive engineering excellence. Beyond delivering high-quality software, you'll help shape technical direction, mentor engineers, champion modern development practices, and embrace emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development, to improve engineering velocity, software quality, and customer outcomes. As technology and business priorities evolve, you'll continuously expand your skills and adapt your approach to deliver innovative solutions. What You'll Do: Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable full-stack applications and services. Maintain, extend, and modernize the PHP-based Scheduling application, ensuring reliability for agencies that depend on it around the clock. Protect callback latency and staffing-accuracy guarantees in every change you make to the platform. Embrace best practices in software development (Code Reviews, Unit Tests, CI/CD). Work closely with the team (Software Engineers, Test Engineers, Product owners). Develop robust and scalable microservice backends. Write clean code, a love of unit testing, and the need to have your software usable from the very beginning. Contribute to the application architecture with a focus on scalability, maintainability, security, and performance. Partner with DevOps to ensure CI/CD pipelines are effective and efficient. Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to incident response efforts when needed. Leverage AI-powered development tools responsibly to improve productivity, code quality, documentation, testing, debugging, and software delivery while maintaining sound engineering judgment and security practices. Evaluate emerging technologies, engineering practices, and AI capabilities, recommending improvements that enhance developer effectiveness and product quality. Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups, retrospectives, and technical planning. Continuously learn new technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices while adapting to changing business priorities and organizational needs. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of evolving business objectives. Requirements Bachelor's degree in a Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent experience 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial depth in PHP. 3+ years working in a modern PHP MVC framework. Proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript and experience with SPA development using Angular or React. Experience with Agile practices. Senior-level proficiency in modern PHP (8.x), including object-oriented design, dependency management with Composer, and adherence to PSR standards. Proven ability to work safely in an established, business-critical codebase — reading unfamiliar code, inferring intent, and changing it without collateral damage. API design and integration experience (REST and/or GraphQL), including defining contracts between systems. Strong SQL and relational data modeling at scale (MySQL); comfort working across more than one database platform. Experience with caching layers and background job processing at scale. Hands-on experience with C#/.NET (.NET 8+, ASP.NET Core) is preferred but not required, as is interest in growing into it while select platform capabilities move toward .NET. Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS) and cloud-native architectures. Solid understanding of modern software development lifecycle (SDLC) and agile methodologies. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
