Staff Accountant - General Ledger Accountant | 100% Remote (WFH) Opportunity! General Summary The Staff Accountant is an integral member of the Finance & Accounting team, responsible for supporting the accurate and timely recording, reporting, and analysis of financial information. This role plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, supporting the preparation of financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and assisting with statutory reporting obligations as required for insurance company operations. The Staff Accountant works collaboratively across departmental lines — including actuarial, compliance, claims, investments, and operations — to ensure that financial data is complete, accurate, and compliant with applicable state and federal regulations. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in accounting principles, keen attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to continuous improvement of financial processes and controls. Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Ledger & Journal Entries Prepares and records journal entries and adjustments on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, ensuring entries are accurate, properly supported, and in compliance with GAAP and Statutory accounting guidance. Maintains and reconciles the general ledger to subsidiary ledgers, identifying and resolving discrepancies on a timely basis. Assists with the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, coordinating with team members to meet established deadlines. Account Reconciliations Performs reconciliations for assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts, including bank accounts, reserves, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, and other assigned accounts. Researches and resolves reconciling items in a timely manner; escalates material or aged items to management with recommended resolutions. Prepares supporting workpapers and documentation for all assigned reconciliations. Financial Reporting and Compliance Assists in the preparation of GAAP financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows, and related footnote disclosures. Prepares and maintains schedules and supporting analyses used in the financial reporting process. Assists in the preparation of quarterly and annual statutory filings in accordance with National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) guidelines and applicable state insurance department requirements. Supports compliance with state and federal reporting requirements. Performs analysis of financial data and results, including variance analysis, trend identification, and commentary on period-over-period fluctuations. Assists with internal and external audit requests and inquiries, including preparation of audit schedules, support documentation, and responses to auditor questions in a timely and organized manner. Supports the design, documentation, and testing of internal controls over financial reporting. Identifies opportunities to strengthen accounting processes and controls and recommends improvements to management. Process Documentation Documents accounting processes and procedures clearly and thoroughly to support knowledge transfer, operational continuity, and audit readiness. Maintains current and accurate desktop procedures for all assigned areas of responsibility. Participates in process improvement initiatives and assists with the implementation of system enhancements or workflow changes. Assists with ad hoc financial analysis and special projects as assigned by management. Provides cross-functional support to other accounting and finance team members as needed. Maintains strict confidentiality of all financial information and company data. Other duties as assigned. Requirements / Background and Experience/Expertise Minimum of 1–3 years of progressive accounting experience, with direct exposure to general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Demonstrated working knowledge of GAAP and its practical application in a financial reporting environment. Experience preparing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis functions). Experience with accounting ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Workday, or similar enterprise platforms). Preferred Experience: Prior experience in the insurance industry or financial services sector, with familiarity with statutory accounting principles (SAP) and NAIC reporting requirements. Exposure to statutory financial statement preparation, premium tax filings, or other insurance regulatory submissions. Public accounting experience (CPA firm) or experience in a multi-entity corporate environment. Familiarity with ASC 944 (Financial Services – Insurance) accounting and reporting requirements. Experience supporting internal or external audit engagements. Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently and minimal supervision, while demonstrating excellent organizational and prioritization skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Exemplary written, verbal, listening, and interpersonal communication skills. Willingness and ability to learn and adapt to new software platforms as required. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Maintain a high standard of accuracy and attention to details. Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Certification Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or active CPA candidate (actively pursuing licensure) is strongly preferred. Education Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field is required. A Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (MBA) is a plus. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Work Environment Remote: This role is a remote (work from home (WFH) opportunity) and only open to candidates currently located in the United States and able to work without sponsorship. It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace. Expected Work Hours: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
