The Staff Accountant, Capital Projects is a core member of the Accounting team, responsible for the integrity and accuracy of the Company's capital expenditure reporting across a dynamic portfolio of hotels. This role owns the full CAPEX lifecycle — from contract and invoice analysis through asset capitalization, depreciation forecasting, and fixed asset reconciliation — and is expected to exercise sound accounting judgment at every stage. The Staff Accountant operates with a high degree of independence, applying GAAP and the Company's capitalization policy to evaluate and input invoices, resolve discrepancies, and ensure that capital activity is reflected accurately and on time. This position serves as a key partner to Accounts Payable, Design and Construction, Asset Management, Hotel and Corporate Accounting, and works directly with the accounting staff at the individual hotels – requiring the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across a complex, multi-entity environment. This is a full-time position with in-person requirements Monday through Thursday and optional remote work available on Friday.
What will I be doing?
Apply accounting knowledge and professional judgment to evaluate contracts and invoices, determining appropriate accounting treatment in accordance with GAAP and the Company's fixed asset capitalization policy.
Input and code CAPEX invoices in the accounting system.
Establish and maintain capital projects within the accounting system with full ownership of accuracy, coding integrity, and lifecycle reporting — from project inception through capitalization of the completed project.
Monitor construction-in-progress (CIP) accounts and activity and coordinate timely capitalization of completed assets.
Prepare monthly and quarterly hotel fixed asset reporting deliverables, including but not limited to journal entries, account reconciliations, CAPEX accrual analyses, and depreciation forecasts.
Assist Director, Project Accounting with the preparation of the monthly fixed asset rollforward.
Investigate variances, unusual transactions, and account fluctuations and be able to independently research issues and recommend appropriate resolutions.
Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to address fixed asset or project-related capitalization questions and ensure reporting is complete and accurate.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase efficiency within capital project accounting workflows.
Contribute to broader accounting and financial reporting initiatives as the team's and Company’s needs evolve.
Complete additional projects and assignments as needed.
What qualifications do I need?
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
Minimum 1 years experience in Accounting with responsibility for reconciliations, journal entries, account analysis and close activities
Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data, identify discrepancies, investigate root causes, and recommend appropriate accounting treatment.
Ability to succeed in an intensely deadline-oriented environment with multiple priorities
Proficiency in Excel, including lookups, pivot tables and data analysis functions
What capabilities would it be advantageous to have?
2-5 years experience in Accounting
Experience working with Oracle Cloud ERP
Experience in fixed asset accounting and reconciliation
Experience in a multi-ownership, multiple business unit environment
Understanding of REITs
