Staff Data Engineer Shape sunday’s data future: build scalable pipelines, strengthen trusted insights, and lead engineering practices that turn restaurant data into smarter products and decisions. Apply to this job 👋 About Us sunday is building the fastest, simplest way to pay in restaurants. With a quick scan of a QR code, diners can pay, tip, and leave in about 10 seconds. We believe great products should feel obvious, not complicated, and we focus relentlessly on keeping things simple while earning trust from restaurants and guests at every interaction. Today, sunday powers payments in thousands of restaurants across the US, UK, and France, helping operators turn tables faster, increase tips, and unlock valuable insights. We push ourselves to go beyond what’s expected, building with ownership, moving fast, and scaling with ambition as we tackle our biggest growth opportunity in the US. About the Role We’re looking for a Staff Data Software Engineer to help us shape the future of data at sunday. Our data platform is the foundation of decision-making across the company, from operational insights to product analytics and machine learning. You will be at the center of that ecosystem, working on a modern stack (Airbyte, Dagster, DBT, BigQuery, Metabase, Amplitude) organized around a medallion architecture (bronze, silver & gold layers). Your mission: help us elevate our data platform, scale our pipelines, and bring our data practices to the next level. This is not only a technical leadership role, it’s also a business-driven one. You’ll work hand-in-hand with software engineers, data engineers, analytics engineers, product analysts, and data analysts to turn raw data into high-quality, trusted insights that power decisions and innovation. Join early, grow fast, and shape the journey! Key Responsibilities Architect and evolve the data platform to ensure scalability, performance, and maintainability across ingestion, transformation, and consumption layers. Design and build our next generation data pipeline enabling reactive data streaming scenarios. Lead and mentor data engineers and analytics engineers in building reliable, reusable, and well-tested data pipelines. Drive quality and governance across our medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold), ensuring clear ownership and strong data lineage. Collaborate cross-functionally with product, data, and business teams to align data models and metrics with key company goals . Shape best practices in orchestration (Dagster), modeling (DBT), and data ingestion (Airbyte & Federated Queries). Promote a modern data culture from observability and CI/CD for data to documentation and schema versioning. Participate in data architecture forums and document decisions through ADRs. Unlock new product use cases by bringing different perspectives on our current architecture. Deliver data as a core product value for the company About You You are a data engineer who cares about business impact as much as technical excellence . You understand how reliable, well-designed data foundations can make products smarter, decisions clearer, and teams more effective. You: Take ownership end-to-end, from understanding the business need to building, shipping, and operating the solution. Bring clarity and structure to complex or ambiguous data environments. Connect technical decisions to business outcomes and product performance. Work collaboratively and pragmatically across technical and non-technical teams. Raise the bar through coaching, thoughtful feedback, and strong engineering practices. Share and champion best practices around reliability, scalability, testing, and observability. Balance speed and quality, and know when to simplify, challenge the status quo, or invest for the long term. Communicate clearly and create alignment around technical direction and priorities. You don’t need to be an expert in everything, but the more of these boxes you tick, the better: Fluent with medallion architectures or layered modeling approaches. Strong experience with data lineage and documentation tools (e.g., dbt docs, OpenMetadata, DataHub). Awareness of data security, governance, and compliance concerns (especially in a PCI DSS context). Knowledge of event-based and near real-time analytics (Amplitude, product analytics stacks). Comfort with CI/CD for data, testing frameworks (dbt tests, Great Expectations), and version control (Git).
