ABOUT PRECISION NEUROSCIENCE

Precision Neuroscience is building a next-generation brain–computer interface (BCI) to heal and empower millions of people living with neurological conditions.

Our first product, Layer 7, is designed to help people with severe paralysis operate digital devices using only their thoughts—opening up new possibilities for daily life.

Our team brings together experts in neurosurgery, AI and machine learning, microfabrication, electrical engineering, clinical science, and more. We combine deep technical rigor with a people-first mindset to turn breakthrough research into real-world medical solutions.

As a Precision employee, you’ll join one of the fastest-moving and best-capitalized companies in the emerging field of brain–computer interfaces. Since our founding in 2021, we have raised more than $180 million, advanced our technology through validation, and initiated human trials with leading hospitals across the country.

Our Values:

We build for human impact, measuring progress by the lives our work can change.

We do no harm, holding ourselves to the highest standards of safety, integrity, and responsibility.

We innovate with urgency because the stakes are high and our users can’t wait.

We bring sharp minds, open ears, pairing expertise with curiosity, humility, and respect.

And we lead the way, taking ownership of our work and helping to shape the future of our field.

We are seeking a Staff Neuroscientist, Neural Biomarkers to identify and validate pharmacodynamic and monitoring biomarkers in high-density human cortical recordings acquired during standard-of-care neurosurgical procedures, and to build a rigorous biomarker program around them.

In this role, you will be the founding scientist on the biomarker program, reporting to the head of Machine Learning: designing the studies, authoring the statistical analysis plans before data collection begins, carrying out the analysis of the intraoperative recordings from raw data to reported results, and representing that science directly to the clinical pharmacology, biomarker, and translational medicine teams of our pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners. As the program grows, the role expands to hiring and leading the scientists who carry it forward.

This position will be based in our New York or Santa Clara office. We are unable to consider remote workers or individuals who are not currently based in the US and not legally authorized to work in the US.

Key Responsibilities

Study design and analysis planning

  • Design prospective human studies within the constraints of intraoperative recording: hypothesis, primary endpoint, comparison conditions, baseline and post-dose windows, and a sample size justified against the expected effect

  • Author a statistical analysis plan for each study before data collection begins, specifying the analyses, the model and its covariates, multiplicity correction across channels, frequency bands, and time windows, and the criteria for classifying a candidate biomarker as supported, unsupported, or inconclusive

  • Identify the confounds inherent to intraoperative data (e.g., anesthetic regimen, surgical stage, electrode placement, concomitant medications) and handle each with the appropriate approach: design controls where the study allows them, covariate adjustment and sensitivity analyses where it does not, and explicit reporting of what the data cannot separate

  • Distinguish exploratory from confirmatory findings in all reporting, including negative and null results

  • Define what each biomarker hypothesis requires of data collection (e.g., assessments, recording windows, dosing and anesthesia documentation) and work with clinical teams to build those requirements into protocols

Biomarker data analysis

  • Perform the full analysis from raw high-density cortical recordings to reported results: referencing, channel and segment rejection, artifact handling, and documented signal-quality QC

  • Develop candidate biomarkers from the recordings - drawing on spectral power and aperiodic components, evoked potentials, cross-frequency coupling, and coherence, and on new measures where existing ones fall short - and characterize their time course relative to drug administration, including dose-response or concentration-effect relationships where pharmacokinetic data are available

  • Establish measurement properties - test-retest reliability, within-session stability, sensitivity to change, and reproducibility across subjects, devices, and sites - as a prerequisite to claims of drug effect

  • Select and apply the statistical methods each question requires (e.g., mixed-effects models; cluster-based permutation or false discovery rate control), report effect sizes with uncertainty intervals, and test robustness across alternative preprocessing choices and subject exclusions

  • Implement analyses as versioned, tested, reproducible code within the ML team’s infrastructure, and produce figures and reports suitable for review by partner biostatistics and clinical pharmacology groups

Partner-facing scientific leadership

  • Serve as Precision’s scientific representative to pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners: feasibility assessment, joint study design, technical diligence, and scientific review

  • Evaluate whether a therapeutic program is a good fit for an electrophysiological biomarker approach, and shape collaborations into well-scoped studies with clear objectives, endpoints, and success criteria

  • Represent both the strength and the limits of the evidence accurately

Translational strategy and scientific leadership

  • Develop the evidentiary strategy for Precision’s biomarkers, including context of use and the path toward acceptance as an exploratory or qualified measure, and contribute to regulatory documentation and partner submissions as programs mature

  • Act as the scientific bridge between the clinical, machine learning, and product teams working on biomarker studies

  • Publish and present externally, and author technical reports for partners, to establish Precision’s scientific credibility in this domain

  • Hire and mentor scientists and analysts on the biomarker program as it grows

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • PhD in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biostatistics, clinical pharmacology, or a closely related quantitative field

  • Demonstrated ownership of a human research program - protocol development, experiments with human subjects including clinical populations, and close work with clinical teams

  • Advanced statistics: pre-specified analysis plans, small-sample and repeated-measures inference, multiplicity control, and confounding in non-randomized human data

  • Hands-on experience analyzing human neural time-series data from raw recordings through reported results; intracranial or scalp electrophysiology (ECoG, stereo-EEG, LFP, or quantitative EEG) strongly preferred

  • Strong coding skills in Python, including fluency with modern AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code), and the ability to contribute maintainable, tested code to a shared codebase in a fast-paced, AI-assisted engineering environment while maintaining rigor

  • Biomarker development experience in a biopharmaceutical context (pharmacodynamic, response, or target engagement biomarkers in support of a drug program), in industry, at a CRO, or in an academic group working directly with a sponsor

  • Working knowledge of CNS drug development: early-phase study design, the role of exploratory endpoints, and how a sponsor makes a go/no-go decision

  • Strong scientific communication, with the credibility and composure to represent Precision’s science to a partner’s senior technical staff

  • Comfort with ambiguity, small datasets, and fast iteration

Strong plus

  • 5+ years of post-PhD experience

  • Formal training in biostatistics, causal inference, or clinical trial methodology

  • Experience with pharmaco-EEG, quantitative EEG, or other drug-effect studies in human neural data, including PK/PD modeling

  • Experience with intracranial recordings acquired intraoperatively or under anesthesia

  • Direct experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology translational medicine, clinical pharmacology, or experimental medicine, including scientific collaborations with sponsors

  • Familiarity with the FDA-NIH BEST Resource, biomarker qualification pathways, GCP, and regulatory expectations for medical devices (IDE/PMA)

  • Domain depth in one or more CNS therapeutic areas (e.g., epilepsy, pain, movement disorders, neurodegenerative disease, sleep, psychiatry)

  • Publication record in human electrophysiology, neuropharmacology, or biomarker development

  • Experience applying machine learning methods to neural data
