Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government. Work on things that matter Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology. Built for a remote life Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers. Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works. The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes. Primary Responsibilities Staff Software Engineer - Full Stack serves as an emerging technical leader while remaining a hands-on individual contributor who operates with a high degree of autonomy, ownership, and accountability. With minimal oversight, you will lead technical initiatives, deliver high-quality software, and help teams successfully execute against project goals, timelines, and customer needs. In this role, you will influence technical direction across projects by collaborating with engineers, product managers, designers, and client stakeholders to develop scalable, maintainable solutions. You'll balance technical excellence with pragmatic decision-making, communicate tradeoffs effectively, and help continuously improve engineering practices across the organization. Primary responsibilities include: Lead the technical design and implementation of complex full stack applications. Plan and execute technical roadmaps with minimal guidance. Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, engineers, and client stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle. Translate ambiguous business requirements into scalable technical solutions. Improve system reliability, maintainability, and performance through refactoring, documentation, automated testing, and observability. Build secure, accessible, and resilient applications using modern engineering best practices. Present technical concepts, implementation approaches, and architectural tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences. Support proposal development, technical demonstrations, and client-facing discussions when needed. Participate in technical interviews and mentor engineers through code reviews and technical guidance. Periodically travel to support client meetings, workshops, or team collaboration. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree and 9+ years of professional software engineering experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Expert-level experience developing modern web applications using React and Ruby on Rails. Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating distributed services. Experience with cloud-native application development, preferably in AWS. Experience using Datadog or other monitoring tools for monitoring, observability, troubleshooting, and performance analysis. Strong understanding of software architecture, testing strategies, CI/CD, and modern engineering practices. Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, testing, and problem solving while maintaining sound engineering judgment. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Tier 4 Public Trust or higher security clearance. Preferred Qualifications Experience building mobile applications using React Native and TypeScript. Experience working on federal government software modernization programs. Experience with accessibility standards (Section 508/WCAG). Experience working within Agile software delivery teams. Experience with containerized applications and Kubernetes. Experience supporting FedRAMP, FISMA, or other government compliance environments.
