Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director, Office for Science Education, the Student Engagement & Learning Manager plans, organizes, and leads the implementation of activities that advance the education goals and mandate of the Unit in student learning and development, particularly in support of undergraduate students’ learning and engagement. These goals include bringing together students, staff from other units, and external partners to ensure the effective delivery of student development activities, the creation of resources that support best practices in teaching and learning, the promotion of professional development opportunities for undergraduate students, and the provision of related education-related resources for faculty and staff
Major Responsibilities:
- Manage the development and implementation of activities and resources to advance the goals of the Unit, particularly for undergraduate students and through activities for future student engagement and learning on campus.
- Promote student learning and engagement to contribute to the enhancement of the university-wide undergraduate student orientation and training in partnership with internal units (such as the Science Undergraduate Society, the First-Year Undergraduate Science Society Teaching and Academic Programs, Campus Life Engagement, and the Students’ Society of McGill University).
- Develop and deliver training series for Undergraduate students to enhance their skills and knowledge as effective peer mentors and/or course assistants. Recruit, onboard, train and manage the work of students in assisting instructors with course planning and delivery. Ensures training needs are aligned with the current needs of students, faculty, advisors and other units on campus. Creates toolkits for mentorship and develops engagement best practices.
- Develop and deliver the annual Undergraduate Science Showcase, an annual public event celebrating the work of students. Recruit and train presenters. Supervise and train staff and volunteers to plan and deliver the event. Liaise with vendors, suppliers and internal units to arrange logistics and the efficient running of the event. Develop communication channels and media opportunities to promote the event. Ensure proper follow-up and create documentation to record statistics, processes and lessons learned.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations of programs’ effectiveness by gathering feedback from all stakeholders such as students, professors, administrators, and service providers (library, IT) to improve future offerings. Drafts reports as needed.
- Manage online and on-campus student engagement programming including pre-arrival new student webinars, virtual drop-in socials, training sessions, learning communities and other offerings.
- Manage the delivery of offerings for students such as SciLearn workshop series and guest lectures on “neuroscience-informed pedagogy, and the SciLearn Peer Collaboration space that are integrated into UO and U1 Science and Engineering programs by liaising with instructors, staff, and internal and external partners.
- Design and develop communications (website material, blog posts, working with student associations, dept. council meetings) to engage undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff in all initiatives promoting engagement and learning in coursework
- Consult with the McGill Community as a subject matter expert on learning and development.
- Directly supervise staff. Recruit, onboard, train and manage the work of staff in support of projects and programming related to student learning and development initiatives. Distribute and verify work, provide training. Provide feedback on performance and workflow. Approve vacation and absences.
- Undertake special projects and perform other duties as determined by the Director.
Other Qualifying Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of student learning, engagement, and development programs.
- Demonstrated ability to design and deliver training, workshops, orientation activities, and learning resources for diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of undergraduate student learning, engagement, mentorship, and development practices within a post-secondary environment.
- Proven ability to build collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, student associations, and internal and external partners.
- Strong project and event management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, resources, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including experience developing communications and educational materials for diverse audiences and platforms.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to recruit, train, supervise, and provide feedback to staff, students, and volunteers.
- Bilingual, French and English.
