Show job description

Are you heading into your fourth year of engineering and keen to spend the summer doing real R&D work at the point where mechanical engineering meets AI? Caliber Design is offering a paid summer internship at our Christchurch office, and we would love you to apply.

About Caliber

Caliber Design is a Christchurch founded mechanical engineering consultancy with a team of 85+ engineers across Auckland, Waikato and Christchurch. Our engineers work embedded in client teams across New Zealand on everything from machine and product design to FEA and project engineering on large industrial sites, in industries including food production, aerospace, energy, medtech and manufacturing. Our goal is simple: help New Zealand engineering deliver world-class solutions and give Kiwi engineers world-class experience along the way.

The internship

We are running an in-house R&D programme exploring how AI can make engineering design faster, more accurate and more reliable. This internship focuses on AI-assisted fabrication drawing preparation and checking.

Fabrication drawings need to be accurate and consistent every time. You will help develop and test AI-assisted methods for preparing and checking drawings: identifying common errors and omissions, building repeatable checking workflows, and measuring how well the tools perform against experienced engineers.

You will work alongside experienced Caliber engineers on genuine R&D, test ideas, document what works, and help shape how we use these tools in practice.

Who we are looking for

- Currently studying mechanical engineering (or a closely related discipline) and going into your fourth year in 2027

- Eligible to work in New Zealand

- Genuinely curious about AI and how it can be applied to engineering

How to apply

As this is a single position, we encourage you to put real care into your application. Applications close 5pm Wednesday 28 October.

1. Your CV

2. Your most recent academic transcript (unofficial is fine)

3. A cover letter (one page) that covers:

- Why you are interested in this internship and what draws you to this project

- Your interest in AI: how you have used AI tools, in study, projects or personally, what you've found useful, and where you think they fall short

- Something you do outside of uni that shows your passion for mechanical engineering, e.g. building or fixing things, a motorsport or robotics team, restoring a car or bike, 3D printing, CAD projects, a workshop job or a hobby build. Tell us what you did and what you learned

We aim be in touch with shortlisted applicants for an interview by the week commencing 2 November.

We look forward to hearing from you.
