Our internships

Make an impact on cutting-edge projects. Help find solutions to complex challenges. Be part of a company that invests in you and your growth. You can do it all as an intern at bp. Our 11-week summer programme gives you the opportunity to build your technical knowledge, develop key skills and learn more about life at bp. You'll be part of one team throughout your internship, supported by a dedicated line manager and buddy. There’ll be opportunities to connect with other interns, take part in training and grow your network across the business.

Role and responsibilities

As a subsurface technology reservoir engineer in our Subsurface & Wells group, you’ll combine your reservoir engineering knowledge with data science capabilities, including Python, machine learning, high-performance computing, AI and analytics. You’ll contribute to projects that transform subsurface ways of working and deliver value across bp’s businesses.

The precise nature of your role and projects will depend on your skills and business needs. Your responsibilities may include:

  • Work with regional teams around the world, combining reservoir engineering and data science methods to develop innovative solutions to complex subsurface challenges.
  • Develop and deploy Python code to accelerate subsurface workflows and improve predictability by broadening the characterisation of reservoir uncertainty.

  • Provide technical support to colleagues using deployed technology solutions.

In addition, you must be currently completing a PhD in Reservoir Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline, with approximately 9-18 months remaining until your expected PhD completion date.

You'll also have:

  • Experience of coding in Python, or demonstrated programming experience in another language, such as MATLAB or C++, with the ability to learn Python.
  • An interest in developing innovative technology solutions for subsurface challenges.

Desirable skills and experience

The following are advantageous but can be developed through training and on-the-job experience:

  • Familiarity with AI techniques, including coding agents.
  • Familiarity with Jupyter notebooks.
  • Experience using code management tools such as Git for version control.
  • Skills in data analytics and statistical analysis.
  • Skills in machine learning or automation.
  • Familiarity with working in a Linux environment.

You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English. Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.
