About the Project

Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Indra a long-term contract to operate, develop, enhance and expand ticketing and access control systems across London’s transport network through to 2034, with extension options to 2039.

This programme covers the maintenance, operation and evolution of a large-scale, complex ecosystem, including turnstiles, validators, ticket machines, sales terminals, back-office systems, payment gateways, IT infrastructure and cybersecurity that supports over 8.6 million daily journeys.

Therefore, Indra will become TfL’s strategic technology partner to guarantee the operation and evolution of the world’s largest and most sophisticated ticketing system. Following a transition period of approximately two years, Indra will serve as the sole provider across the network that includes more than 8,500 buses, nearly 400 Underground stations, around 300 rail stations (Overground, DLR, Elizabeth Line and suburban services), 4,000 Oyster Card outlets, seven customer service centres, and 24 river boat boarding points.

Drawing on over 30 years of experience in urban public transport solutions, Indra will manage and evolve all aspects of the system. The project also envisages, in partnership with TfL, the implementation of new technologies to develop the system, make it more efficient and automate key processes; in short, to jointly create the next generation of the ticketing system for London.

Role overview

We are looking for an experienced System Integration Test Manager to establish and run our UK system test laboratories, supporting the delivery of integrated transport and ticketing systems. The initial focus will be to turn building plans and allocated space into fully operational test facilities, with the equipment, environments, connectivity, tools and working arrangements needed to execute end-to-end testing.

Once the laboratories are operational, you will continue as Test Project Manager, leading test delivery and taking ongoing responsibility for laboratory availability, maintenance and development. You will work closely with the System Test and System Integration teams, Facilities, IT, network and security specialists, suppliers and the client.

Establishing laboratories

  • Translate the testing scope, building plans and equipment inventory into a functional laboratory design, installation plan and commissioning schedule. Identify the capabilities needed for front-office devices, back-office systems, interfaces, simulators, automation and test tooling.
  • Define the laboratory requirements for test benches, device positioning, racks, cabling, power, cooling, network connectivity, secure access and safe working. Include space for receiving and checking equipment, installation, spares, storage, test cards and specialist equipment.
  • Coordinate Facilities and technical specialists to deliver these requirements, review proposed designs against practical testing needs and resolve dependencies between the building, infrastructure and test systems.
  • Plan and coordinate equipment procurement or transfer from the existing supplier, receipt, inventory, installation and configuration. Ensure software, licences, accounts, test data, documentation and supporting components are available when needed.
  • Coordinate network and back-office access, environment configuration and integration with external systems. Investigate practical setup issues with the relevant specialists and suppliers, driving them through to resolution.
  • Define and execute commissioning and readiness checks. Demonstrate representative end-to-end test flows, confirm that the required test capabilities work and address gaps before the laboratory enters service.
  • Manage the setup schedule, costs, risks and dependencies, including phased equipment transfers and continuity of testing. Establish an agreed asset and configuration baseline, operating procedures, support arrangements and user training.

Managing testing and laboratory operations

  • Support system, integration and regression testing, including testing for technical changes and releases. Plan workloads, allocate people and environments, coordinate execution and report progress, defects and risks.
  • Develop and maintain test plans, entry and exit criteria, requirements traceability and test evidence. Coordinate defect triage and provide clear recommendations on test completion and release readiness.
  • Manage laboratory bookings, access, configurations, software versions and test data so that environments remain controlled, repeatable and suitable for planned testing.
  • Own laboratory availability and coordinate preventive maintenance, repairs, spares, calibration where required, licence renewals and support. Manage environment incidents and recovery with technical support teams.
  • Coordinate suppliers and maintain working relationships with client test and engineering teams. Plan laboratory upgrades and capacity changes as the service evolves.

Essential experience and skills

  • Proven experience taking a comparable test laboratory or integrated test facility from initial requirements and layout through installation, commissioning and operational readiness.
  • Experience as a Test Manager for complex systems combining physical devices, software, networks and external interfaces, with responsibility for teams, planning, execution and reporting.
  • Practical understanding of laboratory equipment, test environments and hardware and software integration. Ability to identify infrastructure needs, troubleshoot with specialists and manage technical dependencies end to end.
  • Strong knowledge of test planning, requirements coverage, defect management, configuration control and test evidence, including the use of test management tools and automated testing.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and suppliers, manage schedules and costs, escalate issues clearly and turn incomplete information into a workable delivery plan.
  • Ability to produce technical documentation and communicate confidently with engineers, programme teams and clients.

Desirable experience

  • Transport, automatic fare collection, ticketing or payment systems; alternatively, comparable laboratories involving connected devices and complex operational systems.
  • Transferring an existing test service or equipment into a new facility while maintaining testing capability, and working with incumbent suppliers during transition.
  • Tools such as DOORS, TestRail and Jira or equivalent; device simulators, test automation and security-sensitive test environments.
  • Holidays: 25 days per annum + 8 days bank holidays (options to buy/sell days).
  • Pension – 4% employee and 4% employer.
  • Private medical insurance (including dental & optical).
  • Life assurance.
  • Income protection.
  • Employee assistance programs.
  • Flexible/remote working options.
  • Charitable initiatives.
  • Social events (formal & informal).
  • Learning and development programs.
  • Innovative & collaborative work environment.
