Phillips & Cohen Associates, LLC the global leader in estate account management with operations in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, seeks a System & SQL Data Developer to join our team.
Reporting to the Senior Systems & Data Developer, the System & SQL Data Developer supports internally developed business applications by combining hands-on software development with ongoing production support and maintenance. Using Microsoft SQL, Visual Studio, and VB.NET, this role develops and enhances applications, troubleshoots production issues, investigates defects and system anomalies, and provides support throughout the application lifecycle. Success in this role requires the ability to balance development initiatives with a significant and ongoing application-support workload, take ownership of issues through resolution, proactively identify risks and improvement opportunities, and build strong partnerships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The ideal candidate is a curious, analytical problem-solver who communicates effectively, exercises sound judgment during troubleshooting and is comfortable navigating both project-based work and day-to-day operational support.
This position operates in a hybrid work environment and requires employees to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of our Columbus/Gahanna, OH office.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, enhance, test, and maintain internal business applications and user interfaces using Microsoft SQL, Visual Studio, and VB.NET.
- Balance development assignments with ongoing production support and maintenance activities across the application lifecycle.
- Troubleshoot production issues, investigate application defects and system anomalies, identify root causes, communicate status updates, and drive issues through resolution.
- Proactively identify unusual results, data discrepancies, application defects, operational risks, and opportunities for process or system improvements, escalating concerns when appropriate.
- Partner with internal business operations teams and developers to gather requirements, understand business challenges, and deliver practical technical solutions.
- Build productive relationships with business users and communicate technical concepts, issues, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Perform data profiling, source-to-target mapping, querying, aggregation, and transformation using SQL, T-SQL, JSON, and related tools.
- Support the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of ETL processes, stored procedures, controls, and exception handling.
- Review existing production environments with senior developers to promote consistent, reliable workflows and adherence to departmental and company standards.
- Communicate progress, risks, and recommended solutions clearly to stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment throughout development and support activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three to five years of experience working with Microsoft SQL Server databases, including query development, performance troubleshooting, and data transformation.
- Software development experience using Visual Studio and VB.NET or a comparable object-oriented language.
- Working knowledge of relational database principles and application development practices.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and debugging skills, including the ability to investigate issues, determine root causes, and exercise sound judgment in resolving production problems.
- Experience supporting or maintaining applications in a production environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying risks, defects, and opportunities for improvement.
- Ability to manage competing development and support priorities while maintaining attention to detail and accountability for outcomes.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective relationships and explain technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive approach, with demonstrated ownership, accountability, curiosity, and willingness to learn new technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to JSON, XML, data migration, data integration, ETL processes, or stored procedures.
- Experience working with business users to gather requirements or translate operational needs into technical solutions.
- Experience with change management, application deployment, or production controls and exception management.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, MIS, or a related field.
