An outstanding opportunity for a Business Services/Tax Accountant seeking broader exposure, mentoring and a genuine long-term tax career.

  • Ideal first move from Business Services / Tax into industry
  • Exposure to large family groups, trusts & complex tax matters
  • Melbourne Inner South | Hybrid – 3 days onsite
  • Genuine career succession

About the Company

Our client is a highly regarded and established Australian private organisation with a substantial and diverse portfolio of property, investment and business interests.

Operating across a complex group structure comprising numerous companies and trusts, the organisation offers the scale and sophistication of a large corporate environment while retaining the long-term outlook of private ownership.

The Role

An opportunity now exists for a Tax Accountant to join their established in-house tax function, working closely with and learning from experienced senior tax professionals.

This would be an ideal first move into industry for someone who has developed a strong foundation within Business Services, Private Clients or Tax and is now looking to broaden their experience within a commercial environment.

Rather than advising multiple clients from the outside, you will have the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of one substantial private group, gaining exposure to its companies, trusts, investments and broader commercial activities.

Importantly, while compliance forms a key part of the position, the role offers exposure across tax accounting, trusts, governance and advisory matters, providing an excellent platform from which to build a long-term career in tax.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Tax Accountant, you will work across a diverse group of companies and trusts, with responsibilities including:

  • Preparing income tax returns across companies and trusts
  • Assisting with tax reconciliations, tax-effect accounting and forecasting
  • Preparing FBT returns and supporting GST and other indirect tax requirements
  • Supporting annual trust distributions and associated documentation
  • Working with trusts, Division 7A, Family Trust Elections and trust deeds
  • Supporting fixed asset reviews and depreciation
  • Reviewing financial information and identifying potential tax implications
  • Assisting with ATO requirements, tax governance and documentation
  • Researching tax matters and supporting broader advisory activities
  • Liaising with finance teams, external tax advisers and auditors

About You

You will ideally have 2 to 4 years' experience within public practice, with exposure to larger privately owned businesses or family groups.

Your background may have been developed within Business Services, Private Clients or Tax, and you are now ready to take what you have learned into an in-house environment.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Experience working with large private or family groups
  • Exposure to companies, trusts and complex group structures
  • Sound knowledge of Australian income tax
  • Understanding of trusts, trust distributions and Division 7A
  • Experience preparing company and trust tax returns
  • Exposure to GST and FBT
  • Strong accounting fundamentals and attention to detail
  • CA/CPA qualification or working towards qualification
  • Must hold Australian citizenship or Australian permanent residency

Exposure to property-related clients or structures would be advantageous but is not essential.

You will be organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across a diverse group of entities. This environment will suit someone who can move comfortably between different pieces of work while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Why Make the Move?

For someone looking to leave public practice, this is an opportunity to learn how tax operates from within a substantial private group and understand the commercial context behind the work you do.

You will join a small, experienced tax team offering direct mentoring, genuine development and longer-term succession opportunities. The organisation is looking for someone who wants to establish themselves, continue learning and progressively take on broader responsibility as their career develops.

You will also benefit from:

  • $95k–$100k + super
  • Hybrid – 3 days onsite (Monday–Wednesday) / 2 days WFH
  • 300m from train station | Onsite parking
  • Direct mentoring from experienced tax professionals
  • Broad exposure across compliance, trusts, reporting, governance and advisory
  • Exposure to complex private and family-group structures
  • A stable, mature and professional working environment
  • Genuine long-term career development and succession opportunity

If you have built a strong foundation in Business Services or Tax and have been waiting for the right opportunity to make your first move into industry, this represents an excellent platform from which to build a long-term corporate tax career.
