About the Role

Join the litigation team of a national business law firm as a mid-level tax controversy associate. You will work alongside an experienced senior partner and help support the growth of the firm's tax controversy practice.

What You'll Do

  • Support civil and criminal tax litigation, white-collar defense, and complex commercial disputes.

  • Handle IRS administrative proceedings, including audits, appeals, and summons enforcement matters.

  • Litigate tax controversy cases in the U.S. Tax Court, federal district courts, and the Court of Federal Claims.

  • Research legal issues and draft briefs, memoranda, and other written work product.

  • Advise clients on tax procedures, reporting and disclosure requirements, and penalty avoidance or abatement strategies.

  • Collaborate with litigation colleagues on matters involving tax issues, including white-collar defense and professional malpractice cases.

What We're Looking For

  • Three to five years of tax controversy experience as a law firm associate, tax court clerk, or attorney in a government role focused on tax.

  • A JD and an LLM in Taxation, or current enrollment in an LLM program with completion by Fall 2028.

  • Active bar admission, or an active bar application process, in the state where you will work: New York, Pennsylvania, or Washington, DC.

  • Experience with tax controversy or litigation work. Purely transactional tax experience without controversy or litigation exposure is not a fit.

  • Strong legal research and writing skills, with familiarity with Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, and Microsoft Office.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary is $230,000 to $250,000 annually. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Location

Hybrid, with at least three days per week in the office. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the preferred location; New York, New York and Washington, DC are also options.
