Senior Tax Manager / Tax Practice Leader
Build Something Bigger Than a Traditional Tax Role
Not every experienced tax professional wants to spend the next several years waiting for a partner seat to open up.
We’re partnering with a growing accounting and advisory firm headquartered in St. George, Utah that is looking for a Senior Tax Manager / Tax Practice Leader to help lead and grow its tax function.
This is not a role where you’ll simply inherit a book of clients, review returns, and follow processes that have been in place for 20 years. The firm is looking for an experienced CPA who can bring strong technical tax knowledge to the table while also thinking like an advisor and a builder.
You’ll remain hands-on with complex business tax work and client strategy while mentoring staff, improving processes, and working directly with leadership to help shape what the tax practice becomes.
For someone who enjoys public accounting but wants more autonomy, influence, and long-term upside, this is an opportunity to help build rather than simply maintain.
What You’ll Do
- Lead year-round tax planning and advisory for closely held businesses, business owners, and high-net-worth clients
- Review complex federal and state tax returns, with a strong emphasis on partnerships, S corporations, and related individual returns
- Identify proactive tax-planning opportunities and translate complex tax issues into practical recommendations for clients
- Serve as a trusted advisor to business owners beyond annual tax compliance
- Remain technically hands-on while helping lead and grow the tax function
- Mentor, develop, and review the work of junior tax professionals
- Evaluate and improve tax workflows, technology, processes, and internal infrastructure
- Partner closely with the firm’s accounting, advisory, and leadership teams
- Help establish scalable processes as the tax practice continues to grow
- Contribute ideas around service offerings, client experience, technology, staffing, and the long-term direction of the practice
What Makes This Opportunity Different
This firm is intentionally building something different from a traditional CPA-firm environment.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence how the tax practice operates and grows, rather than stepping into a rigid structure where every decision has already been made.
The environment offers:
- Primarily remote work with significant flexibility and autonomy
- Direct access to firm leadership and a genuine voice in decision-making
- The opportunity to build and improve processes rather than simply inherit them
- A growing advisory-focused organization with an entrepreneurial mindset
- No requirement to bring a book of business
- A small team where your contributions will be highly visible
- Bonus and profit-sharing opportunities
- Potential long-term leadership, vesting, and ownership upside for the right person
- A culture centered on responsiveness, trust, execution, and client value
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who combines technical tax depth with an entrepreneurial, advisory mindset.
You should bring:
- Active CPA license required
- Approximately 7+ years of progressive public accounting/tax experience
- Current or recent experience at the Tax Manager, Senior Tax Manager, or comparable level
- Strong technical knowledge of business taxation, particularly partnerships and S corporations
- Hands-on experience reviewing complex business and individual tax returns
- Meaningful experience with proactive tax planning and advisory
- Experience working directly with closely held businesses, entrepreneurs, and/or high-net-worth individuals
- Strong client relationship and communication skills
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or developing junior tax professionals
- Ability to operate independently without extensive oversight
- A proactive, responsive, solutions-oriented working style
- Comfort working in an environment where some processes are still being built
Experience improving workflows, implementing technology, building processes, developing new services, or helping grow a tax practice is highly valued.
Who Will Thrive Here
This opportunity may be especially compelling if you’re:
- A Tax Manager or Senior Tax Manager at a regional, midsize, or entrepreneurial CPA firm who wants greater influence over the direction of a practice
- A strong technical CPA who enjoys advising business owners, not just reviewing their returns
- Someone who has considered partnership but doesn’t want to spend years waiting for an uncertain opportunity
- An entrepreneurial tax professional who likes identifying problems and building solutions
- A former small-firm owner or practitioner who misses the entrepreneurial side of the work but wants the resources and stability of an established organization
- Someone who wants the potential for long-term leadership and ownership without having to build an entire firm alone
This probably isn’t the right opportunity if you’re looking for a highly structured environment with established processes for everything, or if your recent experience has moved completely away from hands-on business tax work.
Compensation & Benefits
The firm is targeting approximately $150K–$155K in total compensation, with flexibility depending on experience and overall fit.
The package also includes:
- Performance bonus opportunities
- Profit-sharing potential
- Long-term leadership and potential ownership/vesting path
- Primarily remote work
- Significant flexibility and autonomy
- Benefits package
- Strong work/life flexibility outside of client and business needs
Location
The position is primarily remote, but the firm values occasional in-person collaboration and is prioritizing candidates within reasonable proximity to its St. George, Utah headquarters.
Strong preference for candidates located in or near:
- St. George or Cedar City, UT
- Salt Lake City, UT
- Las Vegas, NV
- Phoenix / Scottsdale, AZ
Candidates elsewhere in the Western U.S. may also be considered depending on fit and ability to travel periodically to St. George.
Ready for More Influence?
If you’ve built the technical foundation, enjoy advising business owners, and are ready for a role where you can have a meaningful voice in how a tax practice is built and where it goes next, we’d like to hear from you.
This is an opportunity to take everything you’ve learned in public accounting and use it to build, not simply maintain.
