We are hiring a full-time Tax Manager to own the tax function for a CPA-led outsourced finance firm. The company brings bookkeeping, tax, and advisory together under one team, giving clients a single finance partner rather than separate providers that do not communicate with each other.

This is a department ownership role, not simply a tax preparation or portfolio management position. You will be the final technical authority on complex returns, arguable tax positions, and high-risk filings. You will own tax season capacity planning, the filing calendar, tax advisory, quality standards, and the continued buildout of the tax team.

The company runs on EOS, with written accountabilities, defined measurables, and clear expectations for every role. You will report directly to the CEO and sit on the leadership team as a division lead. The goal is to fully transition ownership of the department to this person while still having the CEO available as a resource for particularly difficult technical decisions.

This is also a client-facing role. Clients want direct access to the person responsible for their tax position, so you will lead tax planning conversations and explain complex recommendations in practical language. Full-time. Fully remote. Must be ENGLISH-SPEAKING.

Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm CST

Salary: $2,800/mo

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the final reviewer and technical authority for complex, high-risk, and arguable tax positions
  • Approve returns and ensure technical accuracy before filings leave the department
  • Own tax season capacity planning, including determining what the team can realistically absorb, how work should be allocated, and which new clients can be accepted
  • Build the tax season capacity plan in November so the department is prepared well before filing deadlines begin
  • Own the filing calendar across every client and entity type, ensuring deadlines are not missed or discovered late
  • Lead the tax function through the January–April filing season, including March and April deadlines, review queues, and frequent client communication
  • Manage the remainder of the annual tax cycle, including planning, extensions, notices, process improvements, and team development
  • Build and develop the tax team as the department grows, including hiring Tax Specialists and taking ownership of their technical development
  • Establish and maintain review standards, workpaper standards, and clear expectations for what a completed return should look like
  • Own tax advisory across the client base, including quarterly estimates, S-corp compensation, planning conversations, and year-end tax positions
  • Communicate directly with business owners about their tax position and provide clear guidance around decisions involving equipment, compensation, entity structure, timing, and other tax considerations
  • Own TaxDome as the tax system of record, including tax workflows and the connection between bookkeeping and tax
  • Handle agency correspondence and tax notices that require professional judgment rather than a standard response
  • Build the department’s hiring bench and drive recruiting on the tax side
  • Improve the existing tax processes, standards, workflows, and capacity model as the department continues to grow

Key Qualifications:

  • Active U.S. PTIN, or eligibility and willingness to obtain one immediately upon accepting an offer. U.S. Enrolled Agent (EA) strongly preferred; an active U.S. CPA license also qualifies
  • Candidates without an EA or CPA credential must be able to demonstrate substantial review ownership, including returns they have approved, standards they have enforced, and work they have sent back for correction
  • 5+ years of experience preparing U.S. tax returns
  • At least 2 years of experience reviewing returns and owning the quality of other tax professionals’ work
  • Deep experience with small-business entities and their owners, including partnerships, S-corps, C-corps, and the related individual 1040 returns
  • Experience running a tax season or owning a substantial portion of one, including capacity planning, filing calendars, and decisions around which work the team can accept
  • Strong technical judgment and the confidence to take and defend a tax position
  • Comfortable communicating directly with clients and explaining complicated tax issues in plain language, including when the appropriate answer to a client request is no
  • Experience deliberately developing tax professionals and improving the technical capabilities of the people working underneath you
  • Comfortable holding team members accountable and addressing performance issues directly
  • Able to communicate capacity constraints early, clearly, and in writing
  • Interested in building and improving a tax department rather than simply maintaining an established process
  • Self-directed and organized with experience working effectively in a fully remote environment
  • Must own and be able to use a working computer with high-speed internet
  • MUST BE ENGLISH-SPEAKING

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working with construction, restoration, trades, or other job-costing businesses
  • Familiarity with ProConnect, TaxDome, Intuit Tax Advisor, or QuickBooks Online
  • Multi-state tax filing experience across several jurisdictions
  • Experience hiring and onboarding tax professionals into a remote team
  • Experience providing proactive tax planning as a paid client service rather than only as a by-product of tax preparation
