About the role
Technical excellence is the main focus of this role. As Tech Lead for Bidlevel, you'll own the technical direction and quality of the product. Most of your week is hands-on: designing systems, writing production code and making the calls that shape how Bidlevel is built.
You'll also lead a small team. You'll start with 1 direct report, with room to grow the team by 1-2 engineers over time. Expect the split to sit around 80% technical and 20% people leadership, with the people side focused on developing the team.
Key aspects of this role
- Own Bidlevel's technical direction, setting the architecture, engineering standards and technical roadmap with the founders.
- Stay hands-on. You'll write production code every week and lead from the front on the hardest problems.
- Set and hold a high bar for engineering quality across code review, testing, observability, security and performance.
- Design and ship production-grade LLM applications with Langchain, LangGraph and related frameworks, including evals, orchestration, deployment and monitoring.
- Make the big technical calls, weighing speed against long-term health of the codebase, and explain the trade-offs clearly to the founders and the team.
- Own reliability in production, so what we ship is fast, stable and cost-effective.
- Work across our tech stack, primarily Typescript for production workloads, with Python for notebook prototyping in Hex.
- Lead and develop your direct reports through regular 1:1s, clear feedback and real growth goals.
- Build a team where technical excellence is the default, through the standards you set, the reviews you give and how you work day to day.
Tech Stack:
- Langchain/LangGraph (Typescript/Python) deployed on ECS & Lambda
- Langsmith for datasets/evals/experiments
- Hex for prototyping/notebook'ing
You're ideal for the role if you have…
- Deep senior software engineering experience, including time as a tech lead, staff engineer or technical owner of a product or platform.
- A track record of technical excellence. You can point to systems you designed and built that held up in production and moved the product forward.
- Production experience with LLM applications, using Langchain, LangGraph or similar, including designing evaluation frameworks.
- Strong Typescript skills. We ship production workloads in Typescript. Python is a plus for notebook work in Hex.
- Solid AWS experience, including how your systems are deployed and run (ECS, Lambda and related services).
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers. Formal direct reports are a plus. You care about growing people and want a leadership load small enough that you keep building.
- Clear communication, especially when explaining technical trade-offs to founders and non-engineers.
- An entrepreneurial mindset, with high grit and a focus on results. You're comfortable with ambiguity and figuring things out as you go.
- A growth mindset, always learning and sharing what you learn.
