Technical Engineering Manager, Chronicle


The Technical Engineering Manager, Chronicle is responsible for the people, delivery, and technical direction of the chronicle engineering team at Hanzo. This is a hands-on management role for a technical leader who can create clarity, develop engineers, manage performance, and help the team deliver secure and reliable enterprise software.

The Technical Engineering Manager will work closely with Product, Technical Delivery and Support, Security, and company leadership to translate business and customer needs into realistic engineering priorities and outcomes.

About Hanzo

Hanzo helps corporate legal and compliance teams understand and manage dynamic web enterprise content. Our software supports their internal teams with SEC/FINRA, PCAOB, FTC and other compliance audits they undergo with defensible preservation, targeted collection, and efficient review of content from social media and complex websites.

The role

You will serve as both the people manager and technical leader for the Chronicle engineering team. You will translate company and product priorities into clear team goals, establish effective ways of working, and remain close enough to the technology to guide decisions and support engineers.

Your primary responsibility is working closely with Product to obtain roadmap priorities, helping them break the epics down to individual tickets and enabling the team to succeed. You will also contribute directly when appropriate by reviewing designs and code, supporting complex technical work, resolving blockers, and helping manage production incidents.

This is not intended to be a full-time manager or individual contributor role. It is a dual-role for a small team. Hands-on technical work should support the team’s effectiveness, while coaching them, keeping them accountable and supporting their career growth.

People leadership responsibilities

  • Serve as the direct line manager for assigned engineers and take responsibility for their day-to-day employee experience.
  • Establish clear expectations, responsibilities, objectives, and accountability.
  • Hold monthly one-to-one meetings and provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback.
  • Coach and develop team members through individual growth goals, stretch opportunities, and practical support.
  • Set individual objectives and development plans, assess progress, address performance concerns promptly and fairly, and recognize strong contributions.
  • Prepare evidence-based performance reviews and lead review conversations.
  • Approve time-off requests while balancing employee wellbeing, team coverage, and delivery commitments.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, career development,
  • Addressing people matters in partnership with HR.
  • Monitor workload, engagement, wellbeing, and team dynamics.
  • Create an inclusive and respectful environment in which engineers can raise concerns, challenge ideas, learn, and do their best work.
  • Lead effectively across different countries, cultures, and time zones in a remote environment.

Delivery and team leadership responsibilities

  • Own the team’s delivery commitments and establish realistic plans based on Product’s list of priorities, capacity, dependencies, technical debt, and risk.
  • Translate product, customer, architecture, and business priorities into clear engineering outcomes.
  • Facilitate planning, prioritization, and execution while maintaining clear ownership within the team.
  • Remove blockers and escalate delivery, resource, or technical risks early.
  • Monitor progress and communicate status, risks, trade-offs, and changes clearly to Product and leadership..
  • Work closely with Product to balance new product development, customer commitments, defects, support bugs, cloud performance and cost, technical debt, and operational improvements.
  • Strengthen engineering practices related to estimation, documentation, testing, code review, release management, incident response, and continuous improvement.
  • Use delivery and operational data to identify recurring problems and improve team effectiveness.
  • Coordinate work across Product, Technical Delivery and Support, Security, and other engineering teams.

Technical leadership responsibilities

  • Work closely with leadership and Product to guide architecture, system design, and implementation decisions across the team’s areas of responsibility.
  • Maintain appropriate standards for secure, reliable, maintainable, documented, testable, and observable software.
  • Review technical designs and code to provide feedback to your team members and continue to improve the effectiveness of the team.
  • Help engineers evaluate trade-offs involving reliability, performance, scale, security, delivery speed, and maintainability.
  • Ensure appropriate ownership of production systems, operational issues, incidents, defects, and technical debt.
  • Work closely with the Technical Delivery and Support team to support incident response and lead effective follow-up when significant technical or customer issues occur.
  • Encourage the reuse of proven patterns, tools, and platform capabilities.
  • Identify technical risks and ensure they are understood, prioritized, and addressed.
  • Stay sufficiently close to the codebase and technical domain to ask strong questions, coach engineers, and make informed decisions.
  • Work with Security to ensure engineering practices support Hanzo’s security and compliance obligations.

Customer and cross-functional responsibilities

  • Work closely with Product to participate in customer discussions when technical expertise or Engineering leadership is needed.
  • Help investigate and resolve complex customer escalations.
  • Ensure customer needs are translated into clear technical requirements without bypassing agreed product and engineering priorities.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, and options in language appropriate for nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Build effective working relationships across the organization.

What you will bring

  • Experience leading software engineers, coaching, feedback, and performance management.
  • Strong technical credibility gained through hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Experience delivering enterprise software or complex SaaS products.
  • Strong experience with Python, or deep experience with Java or C# combined
  • Experience with distributed systems, large data volumes, concurrency, scaling, APIs, and complex technical problems.
  • Experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with Agile or Kanban delivery, continuous deployment, and modern deployment tools.
  • Sound judgment, self-awareness, and a consistent approach to accountability and employee support.
  • Ability to balance people leadership, technical leadership, client needs, and delivery expectations.

Helpful experience
Experience with NoSQL technologies such as Cassandra or CouchDB.

  • Experience with Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or other search technologies.
  • Experience with React or a similar frontend framework.
  • Experience supporting security, compliance, or data-governance products.
  • Experience leading teams through technical modernization, operational improvement, or scaling challenges.
  • Experience working with legal technology, enterprise data, or digital preservation systems.
