About us
At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it's so much more than that. National Grid gives us the opportunity to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don't plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as an Engineering Governance Specialist and find your superpower.
We are recruiting within our Engineering Governance team. These roles offer the chance to shape, strengthen and continuously improve engineering governance, assurance and control arrangements across the asset lifecycle.
This is a hybrid role and we're flexible on base location.
No Sponsorship is being offered for this position
Job Purpose
Working within a regulated engineering environment, you'll play a key role in ensuring engineering decisions are governed effectively, risks are managed appropriately, and compliance obligations are met. You'll support the development and implementation of governance frameworks, undertake assurance activities, and work collaboratively with stakeholders across the business to drive continuous improvement in engineering governance and control effectiveness.
This role focuses on how engineering activities are governed, controlled and assured, rather than the detailed technical design itself.
What you'll do
- Develop, implement and continuously improve engineering governance frameworks, policies, procedures and control arrangements.
- Support the effective operation of engineering governance processes, decision gates, approval pathways and technical authority arrangements.
- Ensure engineering decisions, assumptions, concessions and derogations are appropriately documented, governed and supported by robust evidence.
- Deliver and contribute to risk-based audit, assurance and compliance activities to assess the effectiveness of governance arrangements.
- Analyse governance, assurance and audit findings to identify trends, risks, control weaknesses and opportunities for improvement.
- Support the development and maintenance of governance, risk and control frameworks that strengthen engineering decision-making and compliance.
- Work collaboratively with engineering, asset management, safety, quality, risk and assurance teams to resolve governance issues and embed best practice.
- Maintain governance documentation, reporting and records, ensuring information is accurate, accessible and supports effective decision traceability.
- Provide advice and guidance on governance requirements, policies, procedures and compliance obligations.
- Support investigations into governance or process effectiveness and coordinate corrective and preventative actions.
- Identify and deliver continuous improvement initiatives that simplify, strengthen and enhance governance arrangements across the business.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders and influence positive governance outcomes across multiple disciplines and functions.
About you
We're looking for someone with an engineering background who understands how engineering decisions are made within a regulated or controlled environment.
You may come from utilities, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, rail, defence, aviation or another engineering-intensive sector. What's important is that you've applied engineering principles in practice and understand the challenges of balancing technical risk, compliance, asset performance and operational requirements.
Alongside this, you'll bring:
- An engineering qualification or professional engineering background (essential).
- Experience working as an engineer, project engineer, design engineer, asset engineer, maintenance engineer or similar technical role.
- Experience operating within a regulated, controlled or safety-critical environment.
- An understanding of how engineering decisions are evaluated, justified, documented and governed.
- Experience managing technical risk, engineering change, assurance activity or compliance requirements.
- The ability to analyse complex technical information and challenge constructively where appropriate.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to influence across technical and non-technical audiences.
- A curious mindset, sound engineering judgement and a desire to continually learn and improve.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £55,000 - £65,000 – dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
