Technical Growth & MarTech Lead

Location: London

Reporting to: Head of Digital Performance

Closing date: Tuesday, 20th October at 5pm.

About Starling

At Starling, we are on a mission to provide people with a fairer, smarter, and more human alternative to traditional banks. We are building a leading digital bank, driven by fast technology, fair service, and honest values. Our vision is to create a banking industry that serves everyone, which we accomplish by developing best-in-class proprietary technology, offering an exceptional customer experience, and establishing a strong, sustainable business.

Our five core values – Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim for Greatness – are at the heart of everything we do, guiding our strategy and shaping our culture. We're a branchless, largely paperless bank, committed to responsible banking, sustainability, and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Working Hours: You will work a 37.5 hour week, with shifts between 9am - 5:30pm Monday - Friday.

Hybrid working: All Starling colleagues spend a minimum of 10 days per month in the office with flexibility to work the rest from home.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Technical Growth & MarTech Lead to bridge the gap between our Growth Marketing, Data Science, and Engineering squads. Operating in a highly regulated and privacy-first financial environment, you will serve as the technical architect of our growth engine. You will build highly secure server-to-server conversion tracking pipelines, manage our app-first MarTech stack, and use custom scripting to safely integrate AI workflows into our BI and analytics environments.

What You'll Do:

  • Fintech AdTech & Conversion Engineering: Build, audit, and maintain robust, privacy-compliant conversion tracking architectures across our app and web ecosystems. Deep focus on Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs like AppsFlyer/Adjust), SKAdNetwork, Conversion API integrations, Google Ads Server-Side GTM, and secure offline conversion imports.
  • Data Infrastructure & BI Alignment: Partner directly with Starling’s Data Engineering and BI teams. Design clean event schemas, optimise attribution pipelines, and integrate our secure data warehouses with marketing platforms—ensuring absolutely zero leakage of sensitive PII.
  • AI Tooling & Secure Automation: Utilise Python and JavaScript to automate marketing operations and interact with LLM APIs. Build custom scripts that empower the marketing team to leverage AI for creative scaling, optimisation, and analytics, strictly within our security and compliance guardrails.
  • MarTech System Architecture: Own the technical implementation of our Customer Data Platform (CDP), product analytics, and automated CRM/messaging tools. Ensure our stack effectively drives cross-sell (e.g., overdrafts, business accounts, integrations) while adhering to strict customer consent models.
  • Cross-Functional Translation: Act as the technical translator. Turn complex growth ambitions into clear, secure technical specifications for our backend and app engineers, while helping marketing teams understand data integrity, technical constraints, and platform logic.

What You'll Bring:

  • Technical Growth Experience: 6+ years of experience in growth engineering, MarTech architecture, or technical growth marketing, ideally within Fintech, banking, or another highly regulated, app-first industry.
  • App-First Tracking Mastery: Deep technical understanding of MMPs, iOS/Android privacy frameworks (ATT, Privacy Sandbox), server-side tracking, and custom webhook implementations.
  • Scripting & Data Querying: Advanced proficiency in SQL for interrogating complex BI datasets. Strong scripting skills in Python or JavaScript/Node.js for API integrations, AI workflow automation, and custom tool building.
  • Data Stack Literacy: Hands-on experience working alongside data engineering teams on data modeling, event streaming (e.g., Kafka, Snowplow), and enterprise BI platforms (Looker, Tableau).
  • AI Stack Proficiency: Practical experience leveraging AI and LLM APIs to build custom automation scripts or internal tools for marketing teams.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or equivalent technical practical experience.
  • Strong understanding of UK financial regulations (FCA rules on financial promotions) and strict privacy laws (GDPR, UK DPA).
  • Experience operating within secure cloud environments (AWS).

Behaviours & Competencies:

  • Security & Privacy-First Mindset: Operating in a highly regulated financial environment.
  • Hands-on Engineering Ownership: You need to be a builder, not just a manager. You will automate marketing workflows, interact with LLM APIs, and build secure server-to-server tracking pipelines.
  • Expertise in AdTech & MarTech Ecosystems: Deep, specialised knowledge of Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs like AppsFlyer/Adjust), SKAdNetwork, Conversion APIs, Server-Side GTM, and Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) is essential.
  • Cross-Functional Translation: You must act as a bridge. This means translating complex marketing goals into strict technical specifications for backend and app engineers, while also explaining technical constraints and data integrity to the marketing team.
  • Strategic Collaboration: You will partner directly with Data Engineering, BI, and Growth Marketing squads to align event schemas, optimise attribution pipelines, and integrate secure data warehouses.
  • Secure AI Adoption: You are expected to safely integrate AI workflows into BI and analytics environments, empowering the marketing team to use LLMs for creative scaling and optimisation within strict compliance guardrails.
  • Product-Driven Growth: You will leverage the MarTech stack to actively drive cross-selling opportunities (such as overdrafts and business accounts) through automation and smart CRM tooling.

Why Join Starling?

  • Make an Impact: Work on projects that directly shape the future of banking and improve the financial lives of our customers. Starling is technology-led, and you'll have the freedom to accomplish your goals in innovative ways.
  • Culture of Excellence: Be part of a collaborative, empowered, and forward-thinking team. We encourage experimentation, ownership, and a relentless focus on "doing the right thing.”
  • Growth and Development: We are committed to your professional growth, offering opportunities to learn new technologies, take on new challenges, and own interesting things from day one.
  • A Bank That Cares: We're a Living Wage employer, committed to flexible working, and dedicated to creating a fair, open, and safe working environment with compassion and inclusion at its core.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including:
    • Company-enhanced salary sacrifice pension scheme (7% employer contribution)
    • Private Medical Insurance with Vitality including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton.
    • 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you)
    • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
    • Life Insurance at 4x your salary.
    • 16 hours of paid volunteering time a year.
    • Ability to buy or sell annual leave.
    • Generous family-friendly policies.
    • Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off
    • Incentivised refer a friend scheme
    • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
    • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasingOur Commitment to Equality
