The Wake County Information Technology Department is seeking an experienced Telecommunications Specialist to provide advanced technical support and leadership for the county's enterprise network infrastructure and its connected partner agencies.
In this role, you will lead the design, implementation, integration and monitoring of network hardware, software and circuits that support Wake County’s critical business systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for developing network designs that enhance disaster recovery and redundancy efforts, ensuring the secure and continuous operation of essential network services and business processes 24/7, including holidays.
Essential Functions:
- Implement, manage, process MACD (moves, adds, changes) and troubleshoot Unified Communications and VoIP services for Wake County (Experience with Cisco CUCM, UNITY or NICE Contact Center is a plus). Provide consultation to departments to identify the best-fit voice and communication solutions.
- Manage and maintain telecom closet infrastructure including racks, patch panels, UPS systems and cabling. Assist with staging equipment; network switches, routers, firewalls and related hardware. Label, organize, and maintain structured cabling to ensure clean, consistent and traceable cable runs. Diagnose and resolve physical layer issues such as defective cabling, power faults and mis-patched connections.
- Maintain accurate inventory and billing records for hardware and monthly service costs. Generate reports and analyze data to validate solution effectiveness. Research, procure and deploy phones, headsets and other voice-related hardware.
- Review construction blueprints and provide input on voice/data cabling standards, telecom closet layout and infrastructure requirements.
NOTE: This position has a 24-hour on-call requirement with the ability to be onsite at any Wake County location within 1 hour and 30 minutes and is 60% remote and 40% in-office.
NOTE: A valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record is required.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
- Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related field
- Two years of experience in information systems support
- Four years of experience in information systems support may be substituted for the combined education and experience requirements
- Valid Driver’s License and “safe” driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in the following areas:- Proficiency with copper (Cat5e/6/6e) and fiber optic patch and cabling
- Experience and knowledge of PBX or UC VoIP Systems logic or management
- Documentation and Support Ticket Systems workflow
- Basic understanding of SIP and other networking elements
