Lely, founded in 1948, is committed to creating a sustainable, profitable, and enjoyable future in agriculture. Driven by the challenges farmers face and the needs of cows, we develop high-quality robots and data systems that improve animal welfare, flexibility, and productivity on dairy farms. Our mission is to support sustainable food production.
For more than 30 years, we have been a global leader in the sales and service of automated systems for successive generations of dairy farmers. Every day, we inspire our colleagues to provide customers with innovative solutions and to be a reliable partner for long-term advice and support. With our state-of-the-art Lely Campus in Maassluis and a worldwide network of dedicated Lely Centers offering tailored sales and service, Lely operates in more than fifty countries.
As a Test Automation Engineer, you will be part of the Scrum team responsible for Horizon, Lely’s farm management platform. Your primary focus will be the test automation of the Lely Hub, an on-premises device that connects farm hardware to Horizon.
In this role, you will do more than develop automated tests. You will help build, maintain, and improve the automation infrastructure that makes reliable testing possible. This includes managing test environments, maintaining CI/CD pipelines, supporting User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and troubleshooting issues across software and infrastructure.
The Lely Hub currently runs on Windows, with a migration to Linux planned. You will play an important role in preparing our test automation, tooling, and infrastructure for this transition.
You will work closely with developers, testers, and other team members to ensure our solutions are reliable, scalable, and ready for use in real-world farming environments.
Your responsibilities
- Develop and maintain test automation: design, implement, and maintain automated API and end-to-end tests using TypeScript/Playwright and maintain existing Java/Cucumber (BDD) api test when needed.
- Validate device integration: Maintain automated test scenarios for device pairing and registration, ensuring reliable coverage of both physical Hub hardware and simulated test environments.
- Own test automation infrastructure: Build, maintain, and improve the tooling, environments, and processes required to execute automated tests reliably.
- Automate environment provisioning: Develop and maintain Ansible playbooks and scripts used for test autaomtion and test environments.
- Manage test environments: Work with Kubernetes, Helm, and virtual machine-based infrastructure to configure and maintain the environments in which tests run.
- Maintain CI/CD pipelines: Use GitLab CI/CD to execute test suites, implement quality gates, and provide clear feedback on test results.
- Support User Acceptance Testing: Prepare and configure test environments, help investigate reported issues, reproduce problems, and collect diagnostic logs.
- Improve test reporting and monitoring: Maintain reporting and notification pipelines that transform test results into useful metrics, dashboards, and team notifications.
- Prepare for the Windows-to-Linux migration: Adapt test suites, scripts, infrastructure, and execution pipelines to support the Hub’s evolving architecture.
Technologies and tools
You will work with a combination of test automation frameworks, scripting languages, and infrastructure technologies, including:
- Test automation: TypeScript, Playwright, Java, and Cucumber/BDD
- Scripting and automation: PowerShell and Python
- Infrastructure automation: Ansible
- Containerization and orchestration: Kubernetes and Helm
- Virtualization: Virtual machine-based test environments
- CI/CD: GitLab CI/CD
- Cloud services: Microsoft Azure for storage, reporting, and diagnostics
- Monitoring and communication: Grafana, Microsoft Teams, and related reporting tools
What is your experience?
You are a technically skilled Test Automation Engineer who looks beyond individual test cases and understands the importance of a reliable automation infrastructure. You enjoy working in a collaborative Agile environment, take ownership of technical challenges, and continuously look for opportunities to improve quality and efficiency.
To succeed in this role, you bring:
- Hands-on experience with TypeScript and Playwright, or comparable frameworks for API and end-to-end test automation, preferably complemented by knowledge of Java and Cucumber (BDD).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using PowerShell and/or Python, with an interest in improving test environments and processes.
- Familiarity with infrastructure automation and orchestration technologies such as Ansible, Kubernetes, Helm, and virtualized environments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated quality gates, preferably using GitLab CI/CD, and familiarity with cloud services such as Microsoft Azure.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with an interest in hardware integration, device communication, test reporting, and adapting automation to changing system architectures.
- A proactive, collaborative mindset, a willingness to support User Acceptance Testing, and strong communication skills in English.
Working at Lely means contributing to sustainable progress within one of the most innovative organizations in the Netherlands. You help future-proof the agricultural sector — and we ensure you have the space, resources, and support to do so.
