Test Automation Engineer
Sydney | Maximum-term contract to October 2027
- Join Challenger in a hands-on Test Automation Engineer role focused on Microsoft Playwright.
- You’ll build automated testing solutions across web applications, APIs and integrated systems, helping improve coverage, reduce manual regression effort and support complex technology change.
- Based in our Sydney CBD office, you’ll enjoy flexible working (typically 3 days in the office, 2 from home)
About the role
Reporting to the Test Practice Lead, you’ll join a small, collaborative team with technical, functional and automation expertise. You’ll contribute to the development of automation frameworks, standards and testing practices as Challenger continues to build its internal testing capability.
What you’ll do
- Translate project and business requirements into clear, testable scenarios, identifying potential failure points early
- Design, develop and maintain automated tests using Playwright with TypeScript or JavaScript
- Build scalable, reusable automation frameworks across web applications, APIs and integrated systems
- Execute automated test runs, investigate results, manage defects and retest fixes throughout delivery
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and improve automation coverage, standards and testing efficiency
- Support manual testing activities, including functional, integration and regression testing, as required to meet project delivery needs.
- Collaborate with development, testing and business teams to deliver effective end-to-end test coverage
You’ll work across a broad application and integration landscape, including core platforms, banking systems and new integration layers. With major project activity underway and continued investment in automation and AI-assisted testing, there will be plenty of variety and meaningful technical challenges to solve.
What you’ll bring
You’ll be a proactive, hands-on Test Automation Engineer who can take ownership of the Playwright automation capability, build reliable automated tests and drive practical improvements in software quality, testing efficiency and delivery outcomes.
Experience in financial services would be highly advantageous, particularly within life insurance, superannuation, wealth management or banking. Exposure to complex business processes, financial calculations or AI-assisted testing tools such as GitHub Copilot would also be valuable.
You’ll bring:
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Playwright and TypeScript or JavaScript
- Experience developing and maintaining scalable test automation frameworks
- Experience across functional, regression, API and end-to-end integration testing
- Knowledge of REST services, SQL and database validation
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or Jenkins
- Willingness and flexibility to undertake manual testing activities when required, alongside core automation responsibilities.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to interpret requirements and identify where systems or processes may fail
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams
