🎨 We’re looking for a Volunteer UI/UX Designer to join Nordic Waves Group
Nordic Waves Group is a Danish climate education and systems innovation studio. We combine educational games, digital tools, climate learning and emerging interactive experiences to help people move from climate awareness toward understanding, action and agency.
We’re currently developing our wider NWG Educational Universe, including connected web-based learning experiences, our Greenhouse Calculator, and Operation Terra-Shift - our cooperative educational game currently in development across PC/web/tablet and VR.
As these experiences begin to connect, we’re looking for a UI/UX Designer who can help us create interfaces that are intuitive, engaging and visually consistent across platforms.
What you’ll work on
• Design UI/UX across our web, mobile and VR game experiences
• Create wireframes, user flows, mockups and interactive prototypes
• Design menus, HUDs, card interfaces and other in-game UI
• Help build and maintain a consistent UI design system across platforms, screen sizes and interaction methods
• Work with our art team to translate the wider visual direction into clear and engaging interfaces
• Collaborate closely with game design, development, art and production
• Iterate designs based on playtesting, technical constraints and team feedback
You won’t be working in isolation. You’ll be joining a multidisciplinary, international team of game designers, developers, artists, educators and other contributors building the experience together.
What we’re looking for
Must have:
• Strong UI/UX design skills and understanding of interaction design
• Good judgement around visual hierarchy, navigation and usability
• Ability to turn ideas and requirements into wireframes, prototypes and polished interfaces
• Comfort collaborating across creative and technical disciplines
• A portfolio demonstrating strong UI design and UX thinking
Nice to have:
• Experience designing UI for games
• Experience with VR or spatial interfaces
• Familiarity with Unity
• UI animation or motion-design experience
• Knowledge of accessibility and designing for younger users
• Experience with educational games or digital learning products
The practical part
🌍 Location: Remote
⏱️ Commitment: Approximately 5–10 hours per week, with flexibility around your schedule
💚 Compensation: This is currently a volunteer / unpaid position
🤝 Team: You’ll work closely with our game design, art, development and production teams
NWG is largely volunteer-driven, so we care about realistic commitments, good communication and reliable collaboration. We don’t expect full-time availability - we would rather have a smaller, dependable contribution than an unrealistic commitment.
This could be a particularly interesting opportunity if you want to help shape a UI system from an early stage, work across games + web + VR, and contribute to a climate-learning project where usability and visual design genuinely affect the learning experience.
Interested?
Please complete the application process, or send us a short introduction together with your portfolio, a little about your availability, and why the project interests you, to [email protected]
And if someone in your network would be a great fit, please feel free to tag or share! 🌊
