Title Underwriter – Hospital Segment Location Remote, United States The Role We are looking for a dynamic team player with strong communication skills to join our Underwriting team as an Underwriter – Hospital Segment , reporting to the Director of Underwriting. You will be responsible for underwriting medical professional liability risks for hospitals and healthcare organizations, including current policyholders and new applicants. This role evaluates risk, claims experience, coverage needs, and pricing while ensuring company underwriting standards, objectives, and authority levels are met. Key Result Areas Underwriting & Risk Assessment Select and renew profitable hospital and healthcare organization business through analysis of risk, premium, claims experience, and other relevant underwriting considerations, within assigned authority levels and in accordance with the Underwriting Manual. Evaluate the medical professional liability exposures of hospitals and healthcare organizations, including claims history, organizational characteristics, operations, and potential for future loss. Determine appropriate coverage terms, limits, premiums, exclusions, and other underwriting conditions based on the risk profile of each account. Prepare new business and renewal quotations utilizing current underwriting systems, rating applications, and methodologies. Collaborate with Underwriting leadership on accounts, proposals, or coverage decisions exceeding assigned authority levels. Maintain accurate and complete documentation of underwriting decisions, risk assessments, account activity, and correspondence. Account & Portfolio Management Manage assigned hospital accounts in collaboration with underwriting support resources and other internal partners. Review policy terms, renewals, and endorsements to ensure appropriate coverage, adherence to underwriting guidelines, and sound portfolio management. Monitor assigned business for changes in exposure, claims activity, and other factors that may affect underwriting strategy. Collaborate with Underwriting leadership and colleagues across the organization to support growth goals, retention targets, and overall portfolio performance. Broker, Client & Cross-Functional Partnership Provide responsive service to clients, agents, brokers, and other distribution partners, taking ownership of underwriting-related questions and issues through resolution. Participate in virtual or in-person agent and broker meetings related to specific hospital accounts or broader underwriting discussions. Collaborate with Business Development to build, strengthen, and manage relationships with agents and brokers serving hospital and healthcare organization clients. Partner with Claims and other internal teams to evaluate claims trends, support policy interpretation, and incorporate relevant insights into underwriting decisions. Participate in Underwriting and Claims Committee meetings, as appropriate. Underwriting Expertise Maintain knowledge of medical professional liability insurance, hospital and healthcare organization exposures, industry trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks relevant to underwriting decisions. Participate in educational activities to expand knowledge and expertise in medical professional liability and hospital underwriting and to meet continuing education requirements for applicable licensure. Contribute to a collaborative underwriting environment by sharing knowledge, perspectives, and relevant account or industry insights with colleagues. Key Skills Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex risk factors and make well-reasoned underwriting decisions. Ability to think critically and resolve underwriting issues of varying complexity. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple accounts, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong customer service and relationship management skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate underwriting documentation. Ability to work effectively with moderate levels of supervision and within established underwriting authority. Ability to collaborate effectively with clients, brokers, leaders, and cross-functional partners. Ability to handle challenging or time-sensitive situations professionally. Travel Minimal travel is anticipated for this position. Key Qualifications Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree and/or high school diploma with equivalent relevant experience. 3–5 years of property and casualty underwriting experience. Preferred Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in insurance, business, finance, risk management, or a related field. 3–5 years of medical professional liability underwriting experience. Experience underwriting hospitals, healthcare facilities, healthcare systems, or other complex healthcare organizations. Professional insurance designation or certification, such as CPCU, ARM, or RPLU. Please note: The anticipated salary range for this position is $70,000–$90,000. Actual compensation will be based on relevant experience, specialized hospital or healthcare underwriting expertise, skills, qualifications, and other job-related factors. The base salary will be commensurate with an individual's work experience and educational background.
