Position Summary

The Senior Director of Software Engineering for Finance Technology and Digital Workplace is a critical executive leadership role responsible for the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of US LBM's software portfolio across Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, and the Digital Workplace. This leader owns engineering across these domains: not just people management, but the operating model, the talent strategy, and the culture of execution that makes it all work.

You will lead multiple engineering teams and their Lead Engineers, partnering with a Senior Director of Product who owns the what and the why while you own the how. You will be accountable for shipping software that works on time, at quality, and at scale, across finance systems, accounts payable and receivable automation, enterprise integrations, workflow automation, and AI-enabled applications that serve more than 13,000 associates and the customers they support.

This is not a coordination role. It is an ownership role, and it is at the front of US LBM's AI-First software development model. The right candidate has led engineering organizations through meaningful transformation, knows what good looks like at every layer of the stack, and holds teams accountable without micromanaging them.

Scope: What This Role Owns

  • Order-to-Cash engineering: applications, APIs, and integrations across billing, credit, collections, cash application, and reconciliation (Billtrust, Bectran, BlackLine).
  • Procure-to-Pay engineering: applications, APIs, and integrations across purchasing, invoice automation, approvals, and accounts payable (Medius, Coupa).
  • Digital Workplace engineering: applications, integrations, and automations across collaboration, identity, endpoint, intranet, and workflow automation (Microsoft 365, Workday, Simpplr, Power Automate, Entra ID, Intune, Jamf).
  • The modern engineering stack and the AI-First software development lifecycle that span all three domains.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Organization

  • Define and execute the software engineering strategy for finance technology and the digital workplace, aligned to US LBM's transformation roadmap.
  • Build and sustain high-performing engineering teams, attracting, developing, and retaining top talent at every level.
  • Establish and evolve the engineering operating model: team structure, delivery cadences, standards, and governance.
  • Own workforce planning, succession planning, performance management, and career development.
  • Lead with a coaching model; develop managers who develop engineers, not a command chain.

Delivery & Execution

  • Drive predictable, high-quality delivery across a multi-team portfolio of concurrent initiatives.
  • Champion continuous flow delivery practices (CI/CD, trunk-based development, incremental release).
  • Establish and monitor engineering KPIs: throughput, cycle time, defect rates, deployment frequency, and MTTR.
  • Ensure engineering commitments are visible, credible, and tied to business outcomes, not feature counts.
  • Proactively manage delivery risk; surface blockers early and drive resolution across organizational boundaries.

AI-First Development & Technical Excellence

  • Lead the adoption of AI-assisted development (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) as a core productivity multiplier, and partner with product to discover and prototype AI use cases.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards: secure-by-default coding, code review, automated testing, and observability.
  • Drive platform capabilities that increase developer leverage: shared services, reusable components, and developer tooling.
  • Oversee architecture across the modern stack (TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js, Python, Rust; PostgreSQL and MongoDB; REST and GraphQL; Docker and Kubernetes), ensuring designs are scalable, maintainable, and API-first, while modernizing the legacy C#/.NET platform.
  • Champion security-integrated development (SAST, SCA, secrets management) as a baseline expectation, not an afterthought.

Governance, Collaboration & Stakeholder Alignment

  • Participate actively in Architecture Review Board and PMO governance as a decision-maker.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into executable plans.
  • Communicate engineering strategy, portfolio health, and risk posture to VP and C-level stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
  • Align delivery with the change management process to maintain operational stability.
  • Partner with Infrastructure, Security, and Platform Engineering to ensure end-to-end solution integrity.

Vendor & Budget Management

  • Manage engineering budgets, headcount plans, and vendor and contractor relationships with fiscal accountability.
  • Evaluate build vs. buy decisions with a clear framework balancing total cost of ownership, capability fit, and strategic control.
  • Provide technical oversight and governance for third-party integrations and managed development partners.

Qualifications

Required

  • 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with at least 8 years in leadership roles.
  • 5+ years managing engineering managers, with demonstrated experience leading leaders, not just individual contributors.
  • Proven track record delivering complex, distributed software systems at enterprise scale.
  • Deep fluency with modern software engineering practices: CI/CD, automated testing, trunk-based development, API design, and microservices.
  • Hands-on fluency with a modern stack such as TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js, Python, and Rust, with PostgreSQL and MongoDB, REST and GraphQL, and Docker and Kubernetes; experience modernizing a legacy C#/.NET estate is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud-native development patterns and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub, GitLab CI, and Jenkins.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive AI-assisted development adoption within an engineering organization.
  • Strong executive communication skills, able to translate technical complexity into business language at the VP and C-suite level.
  • Experience operating within structured governance frameworks (PMO, ARB, CAB, SDLC).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in distribution, manufacturing, retail, or supply chain industries with ERP-adjacent systems.
  • Experience scaling an engineering organization through significant growth or transformation.
  • Hands-on experience with security-integrated development (Snyk, SAST/DAST tools, secrets management).
  • Experience with finance systems, accounts payable and receivable automation, or digital workplace and identity platforms.

Travel Requirements

  • 25% Travel.
