Job Description
Thomson Reuters Product Engineering builds AI products for legal professionals. Within Legal Products, this leadership role owns AI engineering end-to-end: the systems and production engineering that take AI from prototype to the products lawyers rely on every day, including CoCounsel, Westlaw, and Practical Law.
As Vice President, AI Engineering, you will lead a global organization of AI engineers, platform engineers, and embedded subject-matter experts, with a manager and director layer beneath you. You will set technical direction and the delivery roadmap while ensuring the accuracy, citation grounding, governance, and auditability that the highest-stakes legal workflows require.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the AI engineering roadmap end-to-end, covering architecture, platform strategy, build-versus-buy decisions, delivery, and release for AI capabilities that ship to legal professionals across CoCounsel, Westlaw, and Practical Law.
- Drive retrieval-augmented generation and knowledge platforms, including multi-LLM orchestration, vector search, and citation-grounded answers over authoritative Thomson Reuters legal content.
- Establish rigorous evaluation, quality, and observability frameworks, with legal subject-matter experts in the loop, so release decisions are tied to measurable outcomes.
- Build the AI governance layer: model and data lineage, provenance, traceability, audit logging, and reproducibility.
- Own the cost, latency, and quality tradeoffs of the AI stack, and demonstrate advantages over third-party alternatives where they exist.
- Build, retain, and grow a senior bench of engineers and engineering leaders across multiple countries, including hiring the next wave of senior individual contributors and managers.
- Partner with product, infrastructure, security, and editorial/SME teams to align engineering priorities with legal customers' needs, and represent your judgment to executive stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Proven record of leading AI or ML engineering from prototype to production, with shipped products used by enterprise customers and personal accountability for key architecture and release decisions.
- Experience leading a large engineering organization (50+ engineers across multiple teams, time zones, and countries), ideally with managers and directors beneath you, and a track record of building, hiring, and retaining senior talent.
- Hands-on technical fluency in LLM application engineering: RAG, multi-LLM orchestration, vector search, evaluation pipelines, and ML lifecycle orchestration. You can set direction and challenge technical leads, and you keep enough hands-on credibility to validate architectures yourself.
- Experience partnering with Product, Sales, Finance, and Customer Success on roadmap prioritization and go-to-market, and communicating effectively with executives.
- Experience turning around or accelerating delayed or high-risk programs and restructuring teams to deliver.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience applying LLMs in law or another comparably regulated professional domain, or clear evidence of ability to acquire that grounding quickly.
- Experience setting AI governance, safety, and risk policy for enterprise customers, not just implementing it.
- Experience integrating AI into an established enterprise software product and scaling it from internal pilots to general availability.
- Patents, shipped models, or open-source contributions are a plus, but not required.
