Position Summary
As a Video Game Designer (AI-First), you’ll play a central role in turning ideas into playable experiences—moving from concept to prototype to execution with a high degree of speed, autonomy, and ownership.
This is not a traditional design role. We’re looking for a highly proactive, technically capable game designer who can take an idea, break it down, build toward it, and drive it forward with minimal supervision. You’ll work across gameplay design, prototyping, systems, production, and team coordination while using AI as a core part of your development workflow. You’ll be expected to move quickly, experiment relentlessly, and leverage modern AI tools to accelerate everything from ideation and research to prototyping, scripting, iteration, and content creation. The ideal candidate is comfortable getting their hands dirty, solving problems independently, and turning ambiguous ideas into tangible results.
You’ll work across multiple game initiatives and collaborate with engineering, art, audio, and production teams while taking significant ownership over the projects and systems you help build.
What You’ll Do
- Own game design initiatives from idea to execution, taking concepts from early ideation through prototyping, iteration, production, and launch with minimal supervision.
- Design and implement core gameplay systems, including mechanics, progression, economies, player loops, balancing, and content structures.
- Rapidly prototype ideas and gameplay experiences, using game engines, scripting, AI-assisted coding, or whatever tools are necessary to quickly validate concepts.
- Build, test, and iterate rather than waiting for perfect specifications, using a strong bias toward action to turn ideas into playable results quickly.
- Leverage AI as a core development partner, using advanced prompting, AI-assisted coding, generative tools, and agentic workflows to accelerate design, prototyping, research, debugging, content creation, and iteration.
- Use AI-assisted development to move from concept to functional prototype quickly, including generating and modifying code, exploring technical solutions, creating content, and automating repetitive workflows.
- Independently identify problems, opportunities, and improvements and take initiative to solve them without requiring step-by-step direction.
- Manage multiple projects, features, and priorities simultaneously, balancing creative development with deadlines, dependencies, and changing business needs.
- Lead or coordinate multidisciplinary contributors across engineering, art, audio, design, and production to move projects toward defined milestones.
- Apply project management principles to game development, including prioritization, planning, task ownership, milestone tracking, scope management, and execution.
- Create and maintain practical design documentation, including GDDs, system specifications, feature briefs, balancing frameworks, UX flows, and implementation requirements.
- Design and refine gameplay loops, progression systems, economies, onboarding, retention mechanics, and long-term engagement systems.
- Conduct rapid playtesting and iteration, using player feedback, analytics, and direct observation to identify problems and improve the experience.
- Make data-informed design decisions while balancing player experience, technical feasibility, development speed, and product objectives.
- Collaborate directly with technical teams to determine feasibility, troubleshoot implementation challenges, and find efficient ways to bring ambitious ideas to life.
- Experiment with emerging technologies and AI-driven workflows to continuously improve how games are designed, built, tested, and shipped.
- Challenge existing processes and propose better ways of working, particularly where automation, AI, or new technologies can increase development velocity.
- Communicate ideas clearly and persuasively, through prototypes, documentation, presentations, design pitches, and direct collaboration.
- Take ownership of outcomes, not just assigned tasks, proactively identifying what needs to happen next and driving work forward until it is complete.
What You’ll Bring to the Team
- Professional experience in game design or a closely related game development role, with demonstrated experience contributing to or shipping playable game experiences.
- Demonstrated project ownership, with examples of taking an idea, feature, prototype, or project from concept through execution.
- Hands-on project management experience, including planning work, managing priorities, coordinating contributors, and driving projects toward milestones or completion.
- Advanced familiarity with AI-assisted development and modern AI tools, particularly AI coding assistants, agentic workflows, prompt engineering, and AI-powered content or development tools.
- A builder mentality: you are comfortable moving beyond documentation and getting hands-on with prototypes, scripting, tools, and implementation when necessary.
- Exceptional autonomy and initiative: you can operate effectively with limited direction, identify what needs to be done, and take action without waiting for someone to assign the next task.
- Strong technical understanding of game development workflows, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and understand the practical implications of design decisions.
- Strong systems-design skills, with experience creating interconnected mechanics, progression, economies, gameplay loops, and player experiences.
- A demonstrated ability to work quickly and iterate, particularly in environments where experimentation and rapid execution are highly valued.
- Experience managing multiple priorities or projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and momentum.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to find unconventional solutions when conventional approaches are too slow or inefficient.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate and influence multidisciplinary teams.
- Player-focused design instincts, with an understanding of how player behavior, feedback, and engagement should influence design decisions.
- Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience leading a game project, feature, or multidisciplinary development team.
- Experience independently building playable prototypes or vertical slices using Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, or similar technologies.
- Strong scripting or programming ability, particularly in environments where designers are expected to implement or prototype their own ideas.
- Experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar AI-assisted development environments.
- Experience building or experimenting with AI agents, automated development workflows, procedural systems, or generative AI pipelines.
- Experience launching personal game projects, prototypes, startups, products, tools, or other independent initiatives.
- Experience in live-service, multiplayer, GaaS, or free-to-play environments.
- Experience designing monetization systems, virtual economies, progression systems, or retention mechanics.
- Experience with UX/UI, narrative design, world-building, or content design.
- Experience working in highly autonomous, startup-like, or rapidly changing environments.
- A portfolio demonstrating rapid prototyping, shipped games, ambitious personal projects, or unconventional approaches to game development.
What Success Looks Like
- You take ownership without waiting to be told what to do.
- You turn ideas into tangible prototypes and results quickly.
- You use AI strategically to multiply your individual output and accelerate development.
- You can move comfortably between design, technical problem-solving, and project execution.
- You identify blockers and solve them rather than waiting for someone else to remove them.
- You can manage several workstreams while maintaining momentum and quality.
- You elevate the people around you through collaboration, leadership, and knowledge sharing.
- You consistently look for faster, smarter, and more effective ways to build great games.
