Working within What Car?
What Car? has been Britain’s leading source of car buying advice for more than 50 years, and is now looking for a Video Production Manager to join our editorial team.
The Role
The Video Production Manager plays a central role in running the What Car? YouTube channel. Reporting directly to the Reviews Editor, this position leads end-to-end video production, from shoot planning and crew management to hands-on shooting and editing ensuring a high quality output that meets publication schedules, strengthens brand reputation, and delivers maximum value to our audience.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-day video shoots and manage post-production editing for car reviews and editorial features, maintaining high production standards.
- Direct and manage the video production team, freelancers and collaborate with short-form contributors across the wider editorial reviews team.
- Oversee day-to-day operations for the What Car? YouTube channel, including the scheduling and delivery of long-form content (aiming for up to three videos per week), YouTube Shorts, and community posts.
- Develop and manage production schedules to maintain continuous workflow and meet tight editorial deadlines.
- Act as the central point of contact for all internal and external video production inquiries, agency contacts, and operational queries.
Key Relationships
The Video Production Manager will report to and work closely with the Reviews Editor, while collaborating with the Senior Videographer and other internal editorial presenters.
The role will lead the video production team and freelancers, and build effective working relationships with agency contacts and other external production partners. Strong communication and collaboration will be essential to maintaining positive and productive relationships across everyone involved in the production process.
Skills / Experience / Knowledge / Minimum Criteria
Knowledge
- Deep understanding of video production workflows, from pre-production planning through to post-production delivery.
- Encyclopaedic knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, etc.).
- Understanding of digital media platforms, specifically YouTube channel management, content scheduling, and audience engagement features.
- Fluency with professional camera systems, lighting setups, and audio capture equipment.
Skills
- Clear, direct communication and strong delegation abilities under fast-paced production conditions.
- Exceptional organisational and forward-planning skills to manage tight deadlines and multiple overlapping projects.
- Sharp eye for detail, particularly regarding visual aesthetics, graphics integration, and accurate numerical data formatting.
- Strong problem-solving skills when running complex, multi-day location shoots with large crews.
Experience
- Extensive experience in shooting, editing, and producing high-quality video content for digital or broadcast channels.
- Relevant experience managing production schedules, workflow pipelines, and creative/technical teams.
- Proven track record of taking the lead producer role on multi-person, multi-day shoots.
- Extensive experience operating professional camera and audio gear in varied environments.
A full UK driving license is required for this role.
