Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA and supports approximately 15,000 girl members and 6,000 adult volunteers in its 47-county jurisdiction surrounding the Greater Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Topeka areas. Position Summary The Volunteer Manager supports local volunteers who provide training, peer mentorship, events and information sharing for troop, day camp and product program experiences and on occasion, leads these activities directly until volunteer leadership is established. This role ensures compliance with GSUSA and GSKSMO policies, standards and business practices. This role will serve in a geographical territory in addition to assigned projects that impact the entire council. Territories are evaluated annually to determine the optimal way to support volunteers and achieve council goals. This is a remote-based position that requires regular attendance at in-person meetings and community engagement events. Employee must reside within the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. To be successful in this position, working in the community, including evenings and weekends, is required. Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Recruits, appoints and trains volunteers in assigned geographical areas into elevated volunteer leadership positions to support troops, day camps and product program experiences. Accountable for the planned growth and retention of the membership and volunteer network across an assigned territory. This is a direct service role, and the goal is to support a healthy and consistent membership and volunteer community Identifies and creates succession plans for the volunteers in elevated leadership positions through intentional interactions with troop volunteers (i.e., new leader introductions, event support, day camp, product program support, regular coffee or in-person opportunities, etc.) Serves as the main point of contact for service unit, day camp and product program volunteers between council staff and local volunteers. Comfortable using all forms of communication (i.e., in-person, virtual, email, text, phone calls and social media) to provide ongoing support, supervision, and direction with regards to GSUSA and GSKSMO policies, standards, and procedures. Supports GSKSMO volunteers at council sponsored events and trainings for troops, service units, day camps and product programs with communication and workshop presentations, as needed. Comfortable learning and using the council’s volunteer management database system(s) to manage and support the entire volunteer management cycle for troop, service unit, day camp and product program volunteers; maintains accurate records. Identifies the need for & provides timely problem solving & conflict resolution support, as needed within assigned geographical area or scope of work for volunteers, caregivers and girls. Serves as internal liaison to other departments or teams to influence positive and successful volunteer and council experiences, as needed. Collaborates with supervisor on the department workload to identify and reduce transactional activities and increase relational volunteer activities. Shares insights with supervisor about trends and interests among youth to help ensure programming and recruitment efforts remain relevant. Acts as a brand ambassador for Girl Scouts by representing the organization with consistent messaging, professionalism, and enthusiasm in the community. Engages supervisor in decision-making when ambiguous circumstances or guardrails are unclear. Accountability – responsible for both the qualitative and quantitative outcomes in an assigned territory or scope of work; able to demonstrate personal contributions to both individual and team goals. Responsiveness/Active Listening - seeks and acknowledges the views and ideas from all stakeholders including volunteers and staff; listens and comprehends what others are saying, takes time to answer questions and explain decisions; follows through on commitments in a timely manner. Volunteer Relations/Management - understands the functions of volunteers; works effectively with volunteers and demonstrates flexibility to support their needs; seeks ways to recognize volunteer accomplishments and provide developmental opportunities to promote succession planning. Conflict Management – demonstrates the ability to anticipate, prevent, and resolve conflicts while maintaining productive working relationships with staff, volunteers and all stakeholders; identifies common interests to seek solutions and resolve Oral and Written Communication - able to communicate effectively with diverse audiences of girls, volunteers, staff and other stakeholders across all communication channels; expresses ideas and facts in a clear and understandable manner appropriate for an individual or group. Project Management - identifies and balances priorities across simultaneous projects; formulates short- and long-term project goals, objectives, schedules, and priorities in line with council goals; possesses strong attention to detail. Confidentiality – can maintain confidentiality with a wide range of sensitive topics. Commitment to Inclusiveness - supports the Girl Scout mission by fostering an environment that welcomes and includes girls and adults from diverse backgrounds. Education and Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job ideally with two to four years of progressively responsible related experience. Technical Computer Skills – comfortable using or learning Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook, Customer Relationship Management systems, and social media Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record and proof of current insurance coverage. Consistent, reliable transportation to meet job duties is required. Employment is dependent upon the results of a criminal background investigation. Bilingual – a plus but not required. Working Conditions: This position is remote based, with regular travel required to the Overland Park office, various meeting locations around the Kansas City metro area, and our two camp This position may require evening and weekend hours to attend events and meetings. Work is performed in a normal interior environment with some exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dirt and dust, and extreme heat or Work schedules may vary; staff are encouraged to partner with their supervisor to maintain a healthy work/life balance. May be required to lift and transport event materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Will be working primarily with adults and occasionally with girls.
