Water Quality Scientist I/II, Seattle

Location: Hybrid, Pacific Northwest (Seattle, WA area preferred)
Compensation: $28-34/hour (negotiable based on experience)

Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Water Quality Scientist (Staff 1 or 2 Level) to join our growing field services team in the Pacific Northwest. This role is primarily focused on planning and executing field studies, conducting water quality monitoring, and managing field equipment. Beyond fieldwork, the ideal candidate will possess a curiosity for interpreting and solving environmental problems based on the outcomes of monitoring, bring analytical skills to support data visualization, interpretation and technical report writing. This role is designed for individuals who thrive in an active and collaborative environment with a clear growth trajectory of transitioning into a water quality field lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fieldwork: Support or lead field data collection programs. This includes water quality, flow, velocities, sediment, or biological sampling.
  • Equipment Management: Calibrate, deploy, and maintain water quality instrumentation, data loggers, and automated sampling equipment.
  • Data Analysis & Management: Quality check, organize, and analyze environmental datasets. Assist in developing data visualizations and trends using Python, R, or Excel.
  • Reporting: Support the preparation of technical memos, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance reports.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with project managers and scientists within water quality and across disciplines—including fisheries and aquatic ecology—to support multi-faceted regional projects.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, Limnology, Hydrology, Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Experience: 0–3 years of professional field sampling experience, preferably in an environmental consulting environment.
  • Field Experience Passion for working outdoors. Ability to conduct weekly field campaigns, especially during the summer season, and navigate a variety of field terrain. Washington boaters license is preferred.
  • Analytical Mindset: Comfortable managing datasets, identifying trends, and translating field observations into clear technical narratives and draft-level technical writing. Strong data visualization skills using Python or R is preferred.
  • Core Requirements: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Commitment to safety protocols.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

· Work environment is expected to primarily be outdoors during field season and a mixture of outdoors and in-office during reporting season. This role requires frequent travel and overnight stays to outdoor work sites and may involve exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions. The work can be physically demanding and require prolonged standing or walking. Ability to lift up to 40 to 50 lbs. Incumbent must work effectively in remote areas, physically demanding field conditions and over uneven terrain. Work confidently and comfortably around water and from boats.
