Overview and Responsibilities The WisTech Open Instructional Designer supports the efforts of open educational resources (OER) across the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). For more information about WisTech Open visit https://www.cvtc.edu/grants/wistech This position may be based anywhere within the state of Wisconsin to support the OER initiatives of the WTCS. Depending on the candidate’s location, the role has the potential to be fully remote, with minimal travel required for essential in-person meetings. If the selected candidate resides within Chippewa Valley Technical College's (CVTC) 11-county district, the position will adhere to CVTC’s remote work policy guidelines. Work placement, remote and on-site, is determined based upon the needs of the College and is subject to CVTC remote work policy and specific department workplace expectations. The WisTech Open Instructional Designer supports the development of high-quality, accessible open educational resources across the Wisconsin Technical College System. This position applies instructional design expertise, learning theory, Universal Design for Learning principles, accessibility standards, and educational technology best practices to create learner-centered materials aligned with competencies and learning outcomes. The role collaborates with faculty developers, subject matter experts, editors, librarians, accessibility reviewers, and other project partners. The position supports the design and development of open textbooks, ancillaries, interactive learning activities, simulations, videos, study materials, and other openly licensed learning resources. Responsibilities: Collaborate with faculty developers, subject matter experts, editors, and project teams to design accessible, engaging Open Educational Resources (OER) aligned with course competencies, learning outcomes, and program goals. Recommend and support the development of instructional strategies, learning activities, assessments, and other learning supports that promote student learning and application. Structure and support learning activities in Pressbooks and other platforms using active learning strategies, Universal Design for Learning principles, accessibility standards, and consistent design practices. Design instructional components using educational technology tools, including H5P, multimedia, accessibility, annotation, and AI-supported applications. Review content to ensure clarity, organization, learner engagement, instructional alignment, consistency, and appropriate sequencing. Support the integration of openly licensed and public domain resources into WisTech Open materials. Provide consultation, workshops, office hours, and professional development related to instructional design, OER development, accessibility, H5P, educational technology, and active learning. Collaborate with librarians, instructional designers, teaching and learning partners, and statewide stakeholders to advance open education practices and sustainable OER development. Manage assigned instructional design tasks, timelines, deliverables, and documentation in collaboration with WisTech Open leadership and project teams. Stay current with trends in instructional design, open pedagogy, online learning, educational technology, accessibility, artificial intelligence in education, and inclusive course design. Provide backup support to the WisTech Open Instructional Design Librarian, WisTech Open Librarian, and WisTech Open Production Assistant as needed, Complete other duties as assigned to meet project goals and deadlines Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices. Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives. Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and writing clearly, concisely, and professionally; practicing active listening; reading critically and adapting communication for audience. Ability to recognize personal biases, adapt to different cultural situations, and demonstrate a commitment to respectful interactions with persons of various ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, or educational backgrounds. Intermediate knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Office 365 Suite. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, or a related field with a minimum of two years relevant experience in instructional design, educational technology, course development, online learning, OER development, or a closely related area. Experience designing, developing, reviewing, or supporting accessible instructional materials preferred. Experience using educational technology tools such as learning management systems, Pressbooks, H5P, multimedia tools, accessibility checkers, or similar platforms preferred. Experience developing or supporting open educational resources in higher education, preferred. Experience working with faculty or subject matter experts in a consultative instructional design role, preferred.
