Join our Community Planning, Housing and Development (CPHD) team and play an important role in the planning and development process for Arlington County!
We are seeking a Zoning Plan Reviewer to provide critical technical and administrative support which includes reviewing by-right residential and commercial developments, building permit plans for Special Exception projects, and ensuring compliance with special conditions.
Specific duties include:
Managing building permits associated with by-right developments, including single family dwellings, town house projects, commercial developments, Accessory Dwelling Units, preliminary subdivision plats and other Zoning permits following verification of compliance with the Zoning Ordinance;
Completing review and follow up of building permits associated with special exception projects including County Board approved site plans, use-permits, and Board of Zoning Appeal variances;
Coordinating all phases of major construction projects to track and ensure developers comply with all permitting requirements, special conditions and other terms approved by the County Board;
Attending meetings with the Plan Review Work Group and construction and developer groups;
Preparing status reports and comments prior to meetings and informing developer/contractor of comments during review;
Reviewing wall-check and final survey plats of projects under construction and verifying their compliance against the original approved plans and notifying the builders and inspectors if a problem exists;
Briefing Zoning Enforcement inspectors on site plan, use permit, and Form-Based Code conditions related to the inspection of projects; and
Providing guidance and consultation to the public and the development community on zoning and permitting issues.
Associate degree in Architecture, Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field; and
Considerable para-professional engineering experience applying land use planning policy and/or zoning practices policy and procedures.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in related field or experience in one or more of the following:
Architectural/engineering plan examination;
Zoning ordinance implementation;
Construction site plan condition compliance or surveying;
Understanding land development terminology; and
Negotiation and conflict resolution.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment, and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information:
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with work schedule flexibility and telework options.
Salary: Compensation offer will be in the minimum to midpoint range of the advertised salary range. Candidates may be eligible for compensation above midpoint range based on high qualifications, experience, and education. Promotional rules apply for current Arlington County Government employees.
