AI/ML Imaging Data Scientist - Personalized Healthcare (Medical Imaging)

Department Summary

This role is based in the Digital Endpoints and Patient-Centered Solutions (DEPCS) team, the innovative digital, AI, and tech function within Roche Product Development Data Sciences (PDD). Operating across the Science of Medicines and Operations, DEPCS is responsible for embedding patient-centered and AI-enabled digital solutions into the fabric of clinical research. By integrating data science, measurement science, and digital product thinking, DEPCS delivers scalable and regulatory-ready innovations that enhance trial design, evidence generation, and clinical value of Roche medicines.

This position is based in South San Francisco, on site.

The Opportunity

The AI/ML Imaging Data Scientist within the Digital Endpoints and Patient-Centered Solutions (DEPCS) function is responsible for designing, building, and deploying machine learning image analysis solutions to enhance clinical trials and accelerate data-driven decision-making in drug development. Collaborating across clinical, imaging, data science, and engineering teams, the role contributes to the development of multimodal AI solutions, particularly in imaging and unstructured data, to drive Roche’s patient-centered and AI-enabled innovation agenda.

• You design, develop, and deploy AI-based solutions to enhance clinical trial design, conduct, interpretation, and probability of success, from early to late-stage drug development.
• You design and implement advanced image analysis applications. These algorithms are based on standard image analysis techniques, vision foundation models and machine learning algorithms tailored to clinical trial data, in a range of disease areas, including oncology, neuroscience, and ophthalmology, ensuring best AI/ML model development practices.
• You collaborate cross-functionally, including with clinicians, biostatisticians, imaging experts, MLOps and other data scientists, to integrate machine learning models into Roche platforms and clinical workflows.
• You analyze complex imaging, biological, and clinical data to generate insights supporting decision-making in clinical development.
• You will work closely with the MLOps and clinical imaging data management groups to deploy, maintain and integrate computational solutions.
• You will utilize and build on your experience in scientific/medical imaging, data and image management, application of novel statistical and machine learning approaches to large unstructured data, software development, and scientific data transfers.
• You present technical insights to both scientific and non-technical audiences.
• You contribute to the publication of findings and to internal knowledge development efforts.
• You maintain awareness of trends in AI/ML, imaging and digital biomarkers, and clinical AI.

Who you are

• You hold an MSc or PhD (preferred) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
• You have 2+ years of post-graduate experience in machine learning, data science, or AI in medical imaging applications within biomedical, pharma, or healthcare innovation settings.
• You bring excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, with a track record of delivering innovative machine learning solutions aligned with business needs, and the ability to work independently as well as in a cross-functional team.
• You have expertise in image analysis, pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision, Large Language Models/Foundation Models, data mining, statistics, and probabilistic modeling.
• You are proficient with scientific programming languages and familiar with high-performance computing infrastructure, machine learning experiment monitoring workflows and modern AI-assisted development tools. Preferred skills include Python, Git, GitLab, Docker, shell scripting, and Slurm/LSF.
• You have expertise in applying rigorous AI/ML development practices, including appropriate train/validation/test design, leakage prevention, robust benchmarking, uncertainty and error analysis, external validation, experiment tracking, reproducible pipelines.
• You demonstrate capacity for independent thinking and ability to make decisions based upon sound principles.
• You bring excellent strategic agility including problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and agility that extends beyond the technical domain.
• You demonstrate respect for cultural differences when interacting with colleagues in the global workplace.

Preferred

• Experience developing or validating ML models for regulated environments or real-world datasets.
• Contributions to scientific publications or open-source projects in healthcare AI.

The expected salary range for this position based on California is 126 200,00 - 234 400,00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
