This is a full-time 9-month tenure-track appointment with responsibilities distributed as described across research, teaching and service. Our aim is to recruit, support, and retain a scholar that will foster science based
conservation of migratory waterfowl and other gamebirds, as well as wetlands and associated upland habitats that sustain wildlife populations and human well-being. Pending Board of Trustee approval, this position will include annual research funds and an Endowed Professorship for those at appropriate rank supported by Winous Point Marsh Conservancy (WPMC). WPMC is committed to providing additional research funding, facilities and logistical support for this research program consistent with their mission.
We encourage applications from scholars with an emphasis on the generation, dissemination, and application of science-based knowledge to inform conservation and management decisions. We strongly
encourage applications whose scholarship demonstrates an integrated program in wildlife ecology and conservation with emphasis on:
- Population dynamics of waterfowl and other bird species
- Ecology and management of wetlands and associated upland systems
- Wetland habitat restoration and ecosystem services
- Interactions among ecological function, wildlife conservation, and human use
The successful candidate will teach approximately 2 undergraduate or graduate courses per year, primarily in waterfowl and wetlands ecology, wildlife population management, and experiential learning courses. They
will collaborate with SENR faculty, Ohio State University Extension and SeaGrant, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, the Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, and other partners on applied
research and outreach opportunities. Depending on experience and qualifications, the incumbent may have a significant co-leadership or coordinating role in the Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory conducting and administering grant-funded research, education and outreach programs.
Performance Objectives
1. Develop new or enhance existing courses aligned with SENR’s Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife major.
2. Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments where students feel they belong within the School of Environment and Natural Resources and related professions.
3. Contribute to professional development and outreach workshops for practitioners and stakeholders.
4. Engage with and provide leadership for the Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory.
5. Develop and/or expand an independent research program on the ecology and management of waterfowl, wetlands, and associated wildlife communities, including presenting results at national and international meetings, securing extramural funding, and producing impactful publications.
6. Advise graduate and undergraduate students, including Environment and Natural Resources Graduate Program and SENR honors students.
7. Work collaboratively with university faculty and staff, School of Environment and Natural Resources and/or OSU extension, government agencies, non-government organizations, and/or community groups to advance the land grant mission of the college and university.
8. Serve the School of Environment and Natural Resources, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate activities, including serving as faculty advisor for
student organizations such as Ducks Unlimited.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required:
- Earned Ph.D. in wildlife ecology, wetlands science, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with applied research on wildlife populations and habitat ecology in wetland systems
- Experience conducting field-based studies and ecological investigations
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Evidence of potential for excellence in research and teaching.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and practitioner audiences.
- Demonstrated interest in and/or experience with teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and advising a diverse body of students.
Desired:
- Experience integrating research, teaching, and outreach
- Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration, with environmental and social scientists
- Experience securing external funding
- Engagement with stakeholders, practitioners, and conservation organizations

Department/School Information
Since its inception in 1968, the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) has evolved and changed to meet the changing needs and demands of society, students, and the various natural resource professions. The School’s foundation is its interdisciplinarity, coupling the natural sciences with the social sciences and human dimensions of sustainable natural resources management for the well-being of people and society. The School’s vision is a productive society in harmony with a sustainable and healthy environment. The mission of SENR is to enhance and impart knowledge of natural and social systems and their essential relationships in the context of natural resource use and management and to continuously improve the academic strength of the School through effective teaching, including extension teaching, sound research, and hiring the best possible faculty.
SENR has 5 undergraduate majors and 7 minors and certificates that share the goal of conservation and stewardship of our environment. Our approximately 600 undergraduate students are active in experiential learning opportunities ranging from the field to the lab. Our graduate programs include an MS and PhD program as well as a professional Masters (MENR) program and several minors and certificates. Our approximately 100 graduate students are active in the classroom and in research, participating in over $13 million in annual research expenditures through our diverse research programs.
