Backend Engineer

About the Role

You will join a six-person engineering team building AI-native backend infrastructure for a healthtech company automating administrative clinical workflows. This role sits at the core of the product, powering the agentic systems that process clinical information for millions of patients and enable rapid customer onboarding, the company's primary growth lever.

What You'll Do

• Architect and deploy AI-native backend systems that process high-volume clinical data via API.

• Build reliable, secure agentic infrastructure capable of handling sensitive clinical information at scale.

• Own critical backend infrastructure and drive its technical evolution over time.

• Shape product iterations end-to-end by integrating direct customer feedback into development.

• Scale systems and architecture to support rapid customer onboarding and company growth.

What We're Looking For

• Up to 1 year of professional backend software development experience, with strong fundamentals in system design.

• Proficiency in Python is required.

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or equivalent.

• Familiarity with at least one compiled or systems programming language, such as Go, Rust, C, or C++.

• Experience with distributed systems concepts and production implementation.

• Understanding of prompt engineering and working with AI or LLM-based systems.

• A strong public code presence, such as an active GitHub profile with meaningful contributions or open source work.

• Ability to write testable, maintainable, and well-structured code.

• Experience debugging and optimizing performance-critical code.

• Comfort with version control and collaborative development workflows.

• Currently employed at an established company.

• Genuine interest in building impactful products in healthcare.

• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) or cloud platforms is a plus.

• Experience with database design and optimization is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $120,000 to $250,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is available.

Location

On-site, five days per week in San Francisco, California.
