Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated kidney Stone Clinical Nurse Specialist in the urology department at University Hospitals Birmingham, it will involve working across all sites. The post is for 37.5 hours per week, over 5 days Monday to Friday. You will work closely with a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Urological Consultants, Outpatient, radiology, theatre and Ward Staff.

Applications are invited from nurses who are dynamic and forward thinking, with an interest in developing new skills and have the ability to deliver high quality patient centred care in an inpatient and outpatient setting. The successful candidate will be required to have essential urology experience and experience of managing nephrostomy's. Practice is protocol driven, but having the skills to manage patients with nephrostomy and being familiar with Flow rates and bladder scan, nephrostomy and catheter management would be an advantage.

The successful nurse will be able to demonstrate the ability to drive forward and deliver services using change management and have the skills to measure any changes made using clinical audit.

A large part of the role is patient support, so the nurse will produce patient information, update the information already available and develop and write the protocols to ensure safe, effective practice.

Teaching is an integral part of this role so being an effective communicator is essential.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The main duties of this job will involve delivering care to patients with Kidney stone urological conditions, also managing nephrostomy tubes mainly in an outpatient setting.

Core Duties will be attended stone MDT. Following up patients that have been discharged from A&E and the ward with small stones and organising follow up. Liaising with patients awaiting surgery and lithotripsy, also counselling them for the procedure and giving advice.

Also a big part of the job is caring for patients discharge home with nephrostomy tubes making sure they have the right equipment and correct following up for their nephrostomy tube change. Also referral on to the community team as necessary support when at home.

Providing advice via the telephone to support care and triage.

The successful candidate will have experience in managing urological patients and caring for patients with nephrostomy's.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Portfolio of certified / accredited post registration professional development.

Desirable

  • Health Assessment post graduate qualification / willingness to work towards

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience with evidence of knowledge and development for Urology.
  • In depth knowledge of specialist procedures required for role, with willingness to undertake further training/ education to achieve agreed level of competence.
  • Knowledge of standards and policies associated with role.
  • Experience of working in a multi disciplinary and cross agency work environment.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the national / NHSE diagnostic/ therapeutic expectations / strategy around endoscopy services and can relate this to the role.
  • Demonstrable understanding of clinical governance / patient safety process's -- can relate this to the role in relation to their personal/professional accountability.
