Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
The Business Strategy Director leads the development of enterprise growth strategies addressing Caterpillar's most important markets, customer segments, products, services, and business opportunities. This role leads high-impact strategy engagements for the C-Suite and senior leadership, converting complex market and business questions into clear choices, actionable recommendations, and measurable pathways to growth.
The Director leads internal strategy teams, shapes the Enterprise Strategy portfolio, and serves as a senior thought partner to Caterpillar leaders. The role requires exceptional problem-solving ability, strong commercial and financial judgment, and the capacity to influence enterprise direction across organizational boundaries.
What You Will Do:
- Lead enterprise strategy engagements focused on long-term profitable growth, portfolio choices, market attractiveness, customer segments, products, services, business models, and geographic opportunities.
- Frame ambiguous business questions using hypothesis-driven problem solving and translate them into structured, decision-oriented workplans.
- Develop high-quality strategic options and recommendations supported by rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Lead assessments of market structure, customer needs, competitive dynamics, economic value, capability requirements, and potential sources of differentiation.
- Build business cases and financial models that evaluate growth potential, investment requirements, risks, returns, and strategic alternatives.
- Lead cross-functional teams drawing on internal Caterpillar expertise, third-party research, external expert interviews, and primary market insights.
- Advise executive sponsors on strategic choices, key uncertainties, implementation considerations, and potential organizational implications.
- Present recommendations to senior leadership and facilitate alignment around critical decisions.
- Establish strong working relationships with Caterpillar business units and enterprise functions while maintaining an objective enterprise perspective.
- Identify emerging growth opportunities and strategic issues that should be elevated to the enterprise agenda.
- Develop the capabilities of strategy managers and consultants through coaching, feedback, and hands-on leadership.
- Contribute to the continuing development of Caterpillar's enterprise strategy processes, methodologies, knowledge base, and talent pipeline.
- Voice and challenge strategic concerns constructively when evidence or enterprise interests require a different perspective.
What You Have:
- Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, or a related discipline; typically 10 or more years of progressive experience in corporate strategy, management consulting, finance, business development, operations, or a related field.
- Strategy Development: Extensive experience structuring complex strategic questions, developing alternatives, and translating analysis into actionable recommendations.
- Business and Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of markets, business models, competitive advantage, corporate finance, and the drivers of profitable growth.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams through complex, ambiguous, and highly visible assignments.
- Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to manage executive sponsors, understand competing perspectives, and build alignment across functions and business units.
- Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to integrate incomplete or conflicting information, test assumptions, and make sound recommendations based on informed judgment.
- Effective Communication: Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate with senior executives in a concise and compelling manner.
- Consulting: Advanced knowledge of consulting methods, project leadership, executive problem solving, and client engagement.
What Will Set You Apart:
- MBA or comparable advanced degree from a leading program.
- Leadership experience at a recognized strategy consulting firm, investment bank, corporate development team, or high-performing corporate strategy organization.
- Experience developing strategies for industrial, heavy-equipment, automotive, energy, technology, or other asset-intensive businesses.
- Experience evaluating new businesses, market entry opportunities, partnerships, acquisitions, or major organic investments.
- Advanced financial modeling, PowerPoint, Excel, and data-visualization capabilities.
- Demonstrated success influencing C-Suite decisions and enterprise resource allocation.
- Ability to combine fact-based analysis with practical understanding of organizational implementation.
- Open to moving to Austin, Texas in the future.
