🇫🇮Finland

Is this job info correct?

We are looking for a hands-on finance professional to join our Finance Department in Helsinki, who enjoys combining day-to-day controller responsibilities with developing better processes, systems, and ways of working. You take pride in completing recurring tasks accurately and efficiently while actively looking for opportunities to improve how they are performed. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial operations, strengthening internal controls, supporting accounting and reporting processes, and driving continuous improvements across the finance function. You will oversee lending and trust fund disbursement activities, contribute to financial reporting and accounting processes, ensure compliance with financial policies and reporting standards, and provide financial analyses that support informed decision-making across the organization. If you are a collaborative finance professional with strong technical expertise, sound judgement, and a passion for operational excellence, we encourage you to apply.

About Nefco:

Nefco (Nordic Environment Finance Corporation), founded in 1990 by the five Nordic countries, is an international financial institution focused solely on green financing. Owned by Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, we work through concrete actions to accelerate the green transition. We utilize a broad range of financing instruments – from senior loans and mezzanine financing to equity, grants, and results-based financing – and we are prepared to take financial risks when there is a clear environmental upside. Our involvement helps make green projects bankable and attracts additional investors. Today, Nefco has over 60 employees. Our headquarters is in Helsinki, Finland, in a collaborative hub co-located with the Nordic Investment Bank and the Nordic Development Fund. We also maintain a representative office in Kyiv, Ukraine, allowing us to work closely with our partners across the region. (Learn more at nefco.int.)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Disbursement Process Support: Manage and oversee the disbursement of funds for Nefco's lending programmes and trust fund activities, ensuring that payments are processed accurately, on time, and in compliance with internal policies, financing agreements, and supporting documentation requirements.
  • Financial Reporting & Cost Analysis: Prepare and deliver accurate financial reports, management reports, and cost analyses to support operational and strategic decision-making. Contribute to the preparation of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance reporting while ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and reporting requirements.
  • Record-Keeping & Compliance: Maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records and accounting data. Ensure compliance with internal controls, financial policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements. Perform account reconciliations and support month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Process Improvement: Review and develop existing finance workflows and tools, including Power BI reporting, data flows, system updates and testing, process documentation, and automation of recurring tasks.
  • General Controller Activities: Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow monitoring, and financial planning activities. Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, assist with internal and external audits, monitor compliance with financial controls, and contribute to the continuous development of Nefco's finance function. Perform other controller responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional Experience: 3-5 years or relevant experience in accounting, financial controlling, financial reporting, or corporate finance. Experience in an international organization or financial institution is considered an advantage.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or another relevant field.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required, as English is our working language.
  • Systems & Process Development: Experience supporting financial system updates, testing new functionalities, improving workflows, and implementing changes to finance processes. Ability to identify practical opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements using tools such as Power BI and other digital solutions.
  • Analytical & Detail-Oriented: Excellent analytical skills and keen attention to detail. Ability to work with numerical data accurately and spot inconsistencies or errors in financial documents. The applicant should take ownership of the accuracy of their work, systematically verify financial information, and be comfortable double-checking figures, documentation, and transactions before finalization.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Strong communication and collaboration skills, combined with a proactive and service-minded approach. The applicant should be approachable, supportive, and willing to assist colleagues with a variety of tasks across different departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional Language Skills: Proficiency in a Nordic language (or other European languages) is a plus in our multilingual work environment.
  • Accounting Standards: Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or other reporting within an international financial institution is considered an advantage.
  • Project Experience: Experience participating in cross-functional finance, digitalisation, or organizational development projects is considered an advantage.
  • Financial Software Proficiency: Strong technical knowledge within standard financial and office software (e.g., Power BI, Microsoft Excel, data management tools, and common ERP/accounting systems) and a willingness to learn new digital tools as needed.

We also value open-mindedness, adaptability, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and a genuine eagerness to learn. These qualities will help you thrive in our team and organizational culture.

What We Offer:

  • Meaningful Impact: An opportunity to contribute to the Nordic countries’ green initiatives – you will be part of financing projects that address climate change and accelerate the green transition in the Nordics, Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • International Work Environment: A multicultural, multilingual workplace within an international organization. We offer a hybrid work model and a modern office located in the heart of Helsinki. While we support hybrid working, this role requires regular on-site presence in Helsinki several days per week. Candidates not currently based in the Helsinki region should be willing to relocate.
  • Supportive Culture: A supportive and collaborative work culture that values professional excellence and teamwork.
  • Flexible Working: A hybrid working model that supports work-life balance, combined with a modern office in central Helsinki
  • Relocation Support: Relocation and accommodation assistance for employees moving to Helsinki from abroad to join our team.

How to Apply:

To apply for this position, please submit your application through our careers page on the Nefco website: nefco.int/contact-us/job-opportunities. The deadline for applications is 6 September 2026, but we will review applications as they are received, so early submission is encouraged.

For any inquiries about the position, you may contact Izabella Persson, Head of Reporting and Controlling Unit, at [email protected]. We look forward to considering your application and thank you for your interest in joining Nefco’s Finance team.
