Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families. As a member of the Business Services team, this candidate will thrive in a self-driven environment and work equally well with both management and team members.

Without the strength of our business services team, we would not be able to provide the industry-leading service we are known for. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic accountant to oversee this team in the role of Controller. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with proven experience as an accountant in a senior role as well as their ability to lead, motivate, and inspire others to perform at their full potential. As a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst, you will make it your mission to streamline our budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting processes. You will produce thorough financial-status reports for senior administrators to help improve our operational efficiency. You will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and play a vital role to aid in our continued growth.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, or Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Business Administration with professional accounting certification or a Master of Accounting.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant accounting or auditing experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience using an enterprise-level accounting system.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience managing budgets in excess of $50 million.
  • Experience using ERP systems, such as Oracle or comparable systems.
  • A sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager.
  • Professional accounting certification, including CPA, CMA, CGFM, or CGA.
  • Exemplary history of financial project management.
  • Proven payroll experience, with a focus on streamlining accounting processes.
  • Experience in governmental accounting or auditing.
  • Experience working directly with Oracle ERP.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting & Operations

  • Manage and maintain the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of Institute activities.
  • Produce accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and pronouncements.
  • Produce the annual budget and forecasts; report significant budget differences to management.
  • Review monthly accounts with school principals and department heads.
  • In conjunction with the CFO, establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on a bi-weekly, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Provide financial analysis, utilizing strong Excel experience to organize and analyze large amounts of data.

Leadership & Compliance

  • Support accounting and payroll team with dynamic leadership that creates an environment of trust and productivity.
  • Ensure consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, upholding federal, state, and local legal standards by remaining knowledgeable about existing, new, and future legislation.
  • Monitor and maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Assess current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes as appropriate.
  • Develop and monitor accounting-based performance metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Work with external and internal auditors and provide needed information for the annual audit.

Administration & Support

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of governmental accounting standards and US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Utilize excellent written communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement long- and short-term goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO.
