About the opportunity

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH) is seeking an outstanding academic leader to provide strategic leadership across its research portfolio and help shape the future of research excellence, collaboration and impact.

Working closely with the Dean, Faculty Executive, Heads of School and the University’s research leadership, the Deputy Dean (Research) / Associate Dean (Research) will lead the development and delivery of Faculty-wide research priorities, advancing research performance, capability, collaboration, translation and impact. This is a significant opportunity to influence the strategic direction of one of Australia’s leading faculties and strengthen its national and international research standing.

As a key member of the FMH leadership team, the appointee will play a pivotal role in translating the Faculty’s strategic ambitions and the University of Sydney Strategy 2032 into meaningful outcomes. They will drive initiatives across research investment, workforce development, research culture, infrastructure and governance, while fostering a high-performing, inclusive and collaborative research community.

The role will also strengthen strategic partnerships across the University and with external stakeholders, including industry, government, health and community organisations, to expand research opportunities and maximise the translation and impact of research.

Reporting to the Dean, FMH, with a dotted-line relationship to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), the appointee will work with considerable autonomy, building strong relationships and influencing across a complex and diverse academic environment. The successful candidate will remain research-active and bring a distinguished record of academic achievement, alongside the strategic vision and leadership capability to advance the Faculty’s research ambitions.

About You (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will bring:

  • A PhD and a distinguished record of academic and research achievement, including competitive research funding, research supervision and recognition in their field.
  • Significant experience in academic leadership within a complex university or research environment, with a demonstrated ability to advance research excellence, performance and capability.
  • A proven ability to develop and implement research strategies, translate institutional priorities into practical initiatives and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • A strong understanding of the contemporary research landscape, including funding, research impact and translation, research integrity, governance and evolving policy requirements.
  • Exceptional ability to build relationships, influence and bring together diverse stakeholders across disciplines, Schools and organisational boundaries to achieve shared objectives.
  • Experience in developing research leaders, supporting researcher career development and fostering a positive, inclusive and high-performing research culture.
  • An established network and demonstrated success in building productive partnerships with universities, health organisations, government, industry and community stakeholders, both nationally and internationally.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and decision-making skills, with the ability to navigate complex issues, provide sound strategic advice and represent the Faculty effectively within the University and externally.

Term and remuneration

This is a Full-time, Fixed term opportunity for 5 years. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Pre-employment checks
